Logan Trailer Wolverine Still Has Time for One Last Fight

2017 is shaping up to be an exciting 12 months for fans of superhero movies. Marvel Studios is releasing three films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a single year for the first time (including, two anticipated sequels plus a Spider-Man movie) and Warner Bros. Pictures/DC is giving Wonder Woman her own DC Extended Universe solo film – before bringing the Justice League to the big screen. Just like Deadpool got that superhero party started in 2016, another R-Rated X-Men spinoff – in the form of Logan – will be kicking things off in 2017, too.

However, feelings towards the third Wolverine film are probably going to be more bittersweet than they were towards The Merc With a Mouth’s solo vehicle; seeing as Logan is Hugh Jackman’s swan song to his time playing Wolverine in the X-Men cinematic universe. Jackman and director James Mangold (who previously collaborated on The Wolverine) don’t intend to close out their run on the X-Men series on a weak note either. The pair and their collaborators have long teased that they are putting together a film that’s strikingly different than any X-Men and/or Wolverine project produced to date. And judging by the early signs, they may have succeeded at doing exactly that.

Now, following the daily release of new black-and-white photographs from the film (along with a preview for the Logan trailer that further hints at the movie’s tone and style) over the past couple of weeks, the actual Logan trailer has now arrived. You can give it a watch, above.

Some fans might be a tad disappointed that the Logan footage in the trailer itself isn’t actually in black and white (like the trailer preview and photos that preceded it), despite that always being a long-shot. Nevertheless, the trailer does paint the film as being a cross between a gritty western and a buddy/road trip adventure set in the X-Men universe, like its cast and crew have long indicated it would be. That mood is further set in the trailer by the Johnny Cash sung “Hurt” that accompanies it, as well as the sparse Texan backdrop and setting for Logan that can be glimpsed here.

The Logan trailer also both confirms past reports about the film and aligns with certain images previously-released, indicating that the movie picks up at a time in the not-too-distant future of the X-Men universe, when mutantkind has all but vanished. In addition, the preview reveals that the mysterious young girl in the film – whom Logan and Professor X (Charles Xavier) join forces to protect – may indeed be a version of “female Wolverine” aka Laura Kinney/X-23; with Professor X even describing the girl as being “very much” like Logan. It’s also readily apparent that, as been suggested for a while now, Logan’s self-healing abilities have diminished by the time the film picks up (hence his greying hair and the scars on his face/body).

Keeping that in mind, this trailer is still very much a teaser and only briefly alludes to key elements of Logan’s narrative – including the now-confirmed villains, the Reavers and Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook), who only make a few quick appearances in the trailer. It also remains to be seen how, exactly, characters such as Caliban (Stephen Merchant) fit into the story being told here. Still, what is shown in this trailer is promising enough to keep hopes alive that Logan will indeed be the Wolverine movie that fans have long been waiting to see.
