The Mario Kart series is a time-honored tradition and beloved gaming pastime enjoyed by a multitude of players across decades, systems, and generations. Played by casual and hardcore Nintendo junkies alike, there are few players out there who don’t enjoy a round of races with their favorite faces from the Mushroom Kingdom.

But the series has come a long way since the days of the SNES, and more characters have joined the roster. Everyone has their favorite for a variety of reasons, but who are they and why? In a world full of plumbers, para-troopas, and princesses, what does each player’s favorite character say about them?

10 Mario

Racers who pick Mario as their character of choice tend to rely on him because he’s the safest option, but they’re not wrong for doing so. Mario is perhaps the most well-rounded character in the series, but that should come as no surprise. As the face of the Nintendo brand, Mario has of course appeared and has maintained his user-friendly nature.

He’s a well-balanced character that racers both old and young can manage with incredible ease. Mario is for players who stick with what works and are comfortable and confident in their decisions on and off the racetracks.

9 Luigi

If players choose Luigi as their main, Mario is probably already taken, they’re the younger sibling, or possibly a combination of the two. Luigi tends to offer the same stats and class as his brother, but he still serves as a nice alternative when Mario is a little bit overplayed.

Luigi players want to try things from a different point of view. Everybody knows Mario, but just because he’s the younger brother doesn’t mean Luigi is second-best. If his appearance in a certain trailer says anything, it’s that he’s not going to stay in his bro’s shadow forever, and neither are his fans.

8 Princess Peach

If players enjoy the pretty and pink side of things, they’ll definitely want to go with Princess Peach. She might be clad head-to-toe in her frilly royal attire, but that doesn’t mean she can’t hold her own when the tracks get dodgy. Looks can be deceiving, and both Peach and her fans know that.

While her drifting skills might be a little less-than-perfect, she’s a solid choice for anyone wanting to get behind the wheel of a kart, cycle, or clown-copter. Although not as well-rounded as Mario or Luigi, Peach handles fairly well in the hands of even the newest of players.

7 Toad

Toad is for players who play to win, plain and simple. Lighter and faster than most of his contemporaries, gamers whose main the mushroom-headed sidekick of Princess Peach are those who know the value of risk and reward. Speed is the most important factor for a champion racer, and Toad is the best choice for those wanting to blaze past the competition.

Toad fans are committed and let their ambition get them into the winner’s circle. Underdogs on the best of days, judge them not by their size but by their abilities.

6 Yoshi

Yoshi is there for a good time, and that’s okay. Players who pick him as their main are typically drawn in by his wide-eyed innocence and adorable nature, but he’s still a very capable racer. Like Mario and Luigi, he’s a well-rounded character in the medium class but has a few perks to keep things interesting.

Yoshi players are just happy to be invited to the race, and enjoyment of the game is more important than the victory. They’re easy-going, open-minded, and always a part of a group. Simply put, everyone has a Yoshi in their party at some point.

5 Wario

Wario is the mushroom kingdom’s wildcard, the prankster, the troublemaker, and his players may or may not fall into that category as well. These racers like to tear up the road and make frequent use of the weapon-based powerups to bombard their way up the ranks. He’s a great choice for those looking to deal some damage on the track. That being said, they’re not malicious in their mischief.

Players who love Wario are the comedians and goofballs of the gamer community. They might talk smack and be prone to rage, but they’re always pretty entertaining at the end of the day. Whether they win or lose, Wario will definitely be loud about it.

4 Bowser

Players who main Bowser are aggressive but fair. Like the king of the Koopa himself, they will wreck and ravage anyone who gets between them and the finish line. While not the fastest, Bowser can take a beating and dish it out as well. He might slow down at times, but he’s hardly ever down for the count.

Bowser fans will torch the competition if they have to, and they won’t lose any sleep over it either. Appropriate for one of the most iconic gaming villains. If players are looking for a more offensive approach to their racing, this guy is definitely the way to go.

3 Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong is the party animal of Mario’s crew, and he also serves as a happy medium amongst bulkier characters like Bowser and Wario. He’s durable and handles quite decently, but he’s no pushover by any means either. DK players like something grounded, but know how to cut loose as well.

He might be big and burly, but he can still compete with the best of them. Though not as aggressive as Bowser, DK is for players who want to stand their ground but aren’t afraid to have a fun-loving soft side.

2 Mii

A Mii’s personality is entirely determined by that of their player. A blank slate with decent handling and skills in the world of Mario Kart, Mii players represent the individuals who want to make a statement while they’re racing. They’re committed enough to their identity that they will bring it with them to the game if the software lets them.

Mii players are proud of their individualism, and while it’s definitely fun to play as Nintendo characters like Mario, Bowser, or Toad, sometimes it’s better for players just to be themselves. There’s certainly nothing wrong with that concept.

1 Any Guest Character

There are simply too many to name with this one, but they do all fit under one category. Players who seek to unlock or download characters like Link, the Inklings, or Isabella are the true die-hard Nintendo fans who love it when everyone gets to play together, regardless of game or system.

The point of games like Mario Kart is that it’s more fun when more players are involved, and lovers of these guest characters recognize that tremendously. They’re the party planners who want everyone involved to have a good time. As unique as the guest roster itself, these gamers have a lot of variety to offer.
