While Aragon and Arwen may be couple goals in the Lord of the Rings franchise, not every pairing works as well. In fact, some are downright toxic.

While the Lord of the Rings series is mostly known for its thrilling fantasy elements and massive battle sequences, the relationships within the films are also very important. From Peter Jackson’s original trilogy to the subsequent Hobbit trilogy, there have been some notable character pairings in Middle-earth.
Some of these relationships are meant to be romantic while others are just strong friendships. But in this world of constant war and supernatural danger, not all of their relationships were built to last. Some are doomed from the beginning while others are inspiring examples of how strong a bond can be.
10 Gollum And The Ring
This is undoubtedly the most toxic and damaging relationship in the entire story. The hobbit named Smeagol seemed to have a pleasant life until he found the One Ring and became obsessed with it. It drives him to murder his best friend and turn him into a cursed being known as Gollum.
Though the ring does nothing but poison Gollum and drive him insane, he cherishes it more than anything else in the world. When he tries to find redemption, the ring pulls him back and eventually leads him to his death.
9 Tauriel And Legolas
One of the biggest complaints about the Hobbit movies was that so much unnecessary material was added to what was a much simpler story. This included bringing back characters who didn’t belong, like Legolas, and introducing new characters like Tauriel.
Legolas and Tauriel make for a pretty effective team in a fight, but the half-baked romance between them is far less successful. It just forced Legolas to be the third wheel for two movies before the two elves go their separate ways.
8 Kili And Tauriel
The love triangle that Legolas finds himself in is between the elf Tauriel and the dwarf Kili. Though this is meant to be some sort of star-crossed romance between two supposed enemies, it feels hollow and unearned.
These two characters form a bond for seemingly no reason other than it being in the script. Every scene focused on their romance grinds the movie to a halt and when it ends in Kili’s death, the tragedy of it is lost because the viewers are still wondering why they fell in love in the first place.
7 Eowyn And Aragorn
Even the romances that don’t blossom into anything can be touching. Such is the case with Eowyn and Aragorn. Eowyn is the strong niece of King Théoden. As she sees her uncle and her kingdom falling apart, Aragorn arrives to save the day so it’s not hard to see why she falls for him.
Though Eowyn forms a strong and fast connection to Aragorn, he is in love with Arwen. He is kind and intrigued by Eowyn, but helps her realize she does not need his love.
6 Gandalf And Galadriel
Gandalf and Galadriel are the only two characters to appear in all six of the Lord of the Rings movies. So it is not too surprising that Peter Jackson eventually got around to building a connection between these two that seemed to go beyond friendly comrades.
In the Hobbit movies, it is strongly hinted that these two share feelings for each other at the very least. It seems like their duties to the protection of Middle-earth prevent any pursuit of this romance, but it lingers there nonetheless.
5 Legolas And Gimli
Friendships are very important in these stories and one of the most rewarding is the one that develops between Legolas and Gimli. Though elves and dwarves rarely get along, these two find themselves as part of the Fellowship together and reluctant allies.
Over time, they fight side by side, develop a friendly competition with each other, and look out for one another. While Gimli still makes cracks about elves, he eventually admits that he sees Legolas as a friend.
4 Merry And Pippin
One of the most inseparable pairs in these stories is Merry and Pippin. The two trouble-making hobbits accidentally find themselves accompanying Frodo and Sam on their dangerous quest. They initially seem ill-equipped for the mission but prove themselves heroes.
Even out of their elements, these two young hobbits seem to find strength in each other’s companionship. In fact, it feels strange when they are eventually separated in Return of the King as they seem so connected.
3 Frodo And Sam
As fitting a pair as Merry and Pippin make, they will always come in second to the other hobbit duo of Sam and Frodo. Like the others, these two are taken for outside their comfort zone and only have each other to depend on for the most part.
Even as the ring poisons Frodo’s mind, he is able to appreciate what a good friend Sam is. And Sam proves himself to be the best friend of all time as he puts his life on the line for Frodo over and over again, doing his best to make sure he is safe.
2 Sam And Rosie
After everything he went through, no character deserved a happy ending as much as Samwise Gamgee. The hobbit was sweet on the local girl named Rosie who worked at the Shire’s pub, but he was always too shy to approach her.
After getting back from saving Middle-earth, he finds the courage to talk to her. They end up married with a couple of kids, which is exactly what Sam deserved.
1 Aragorn And Arwen
While the forbidden romance between Tauriel and Kili flopped in the Hobbit movies, Peter Jackson proved he could make an effective romance as seen between Aragorn and Arwen in the original trilogy.
Though he is a mortal man and she is an elf, they fall in love. Arwen is willing to give up immortality to be with him and while Aragorn is reluctant to allow her to make such a choice, they eventually decide that all that matters is the time they are able to share together.
