Lord of the Rings 10 Ways Frodo Got Worse & Worse

Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films, based on the acclaimed novels by J.R.R. Tolkien, provided some of the most imaginative fantasy adventures in cinematic history. The timeless story of nine brave heroes banding together to save Middle-Earth from the dark lord Sauron continues to captivate fans over a decade later.

One of the most divisive characters in the Fellowship was Frodo Baggins, a kindly hobbit who offered to take the Ring of Power to Mordor. The burden of being the Ring-Bearer poisoned his mind along the journey, and he became conceited, foul-tempered, and increasingly paranoid about the intentions of his closest friends. Here are 10 ways Frodo got worse and worse over the course of the films.

10 He Ignored Legolas

Though the Prince of Mirkwood graciously pledged his bow to Frodo at Elrond’s Council in The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo never gave him so much as the time of day during their long trek to Mordor in the second half of the film.

By The Two Towers, their paths were no longer intertwined, but in Return of the King when Frodo is recovering back in Rivendell after his trials in destroying the One Ring, Legolas files in with everyone to wish him well and he still never exchanges words with him.

9 He Kept Using The Ring

As the Ring-Bearer, Frodo was required to not only destroy the ring at Mount Doom, but also keep himself from succumbing to its power before he got to Mordor. If he wore it, he would also risk the Eye of Sauron finding out his exact location.

Despite knowing the dangers of wearing the Ring, Frodo puts it on 3 different times. First in Bree in The Fellowship of the Ring, then again on Weathertop where he got stabbed by the Witch-King, then finally trying to outsmart a maddened Boromir.

8 He Ignored Everyone Else’s Advice

Frodo had a bad habit of believing that he knew best when it came to the One Ring. He even disregarded the advice of Gandalf (who was thousands of years old) when he told him not to wear the ring, and not to enter the mines of Moria in Fellowship of the Ring (Frodo did both).

When Aragorn tried to give him advice after the group had lost Gandalf, he accused him of wanting the ring. When Sam told him not to trust Gollum in The Two Towers, Frodo accused Sam of being untrustworthy for eating the last of their bread rations which was a lie invented by Gollum.

7 He Kept Offering The Ring To People

During his time as Ring-Bearer, Frodo discovered it was a heavy burden being responsible for the fate of Middle-Earth, so on more than one occasion, he decided to offer it up to others. The first was to Galadriel, who managed to refuse it.

The second was to Boromir, who greatly desired the Ring to help the people of Gondor, but Frodo ultimately kept the ring for himself because Boromir proved to be too unstable. When Sam tries to shoulder Frodo’s burden by taking the ring for a while, that’s when Frodo chooses to refuse to give it up.

6 He Wouldn’t Ask Others For Help

Being tasked with the One Ring was no walk in the Shire, and Frodo knew he needed help to reach Mordor and destroy it. Yet despite assembling the Fellowship, he didn’t reveal the increasing burden of the Ring of Power.

Even in The Two Towers, when he’s clearly growing weaker while traversing the Dead Marshes with Samwise, he ignores his friend’s warnings which almost causes him to succumb to the marsh’s spell, and in Return of the King, he’s so weak from the Ring that he can’t fight off Shelob without Sam.

5 He Constantly Needed Saving

The burden of the ring may have been heavy, but of the four hobbits Frodo was the most ill-equipped to handle a blade, and hobbits aren’t known for being warriors. Even Merry and Pippin became soldiers for Rohan and Gondor, respectively, by the events of The Two Towers.

Frodo however always needed to be saved throughout the films. From the Nazgul on Weathertop, from the orcs in the Mines of Moria, from the Uruk-hai at Amon Hen, from the spirits of the Dead Marshes, from orcs at the Tower of Cirith Ungol, with Shelob the spider, and from himself inside Mount Doom.

4 He Trusted Gollum

Frodo and Gollum shared a bond that Samwise could never understand in The Two Towers; they both coveted the One Ring, and were both consumed by its dark power. That’s why Frodo tended to trust Gollum even when Sam told him it was foolish.

In The Two Towers, Sam has to physically fight Gollum for trying to steal the ring while he slept. Yet in Return of the King, he actually wants to part ways with Sam and go on to Mordor alone with Gollum despite knowing it would place his life in jeopardy.

3 He Abandoned His Friends

Despite the fact that Elrond went to all the trouble of convening a council in Rivendell to give Frodo some assistance on his quest, Frodo abandoned his friends the moment he decided they’d be better off without him. In the words of Gandalf, that wasn’t for him to decide.

He scuttled off with Samwise in The Fellowship of the Ring, leaving the rest of the Fellowship behind to be mortally wounded and/or kidnapped by orcs. Then in Return of the King, he left Samwise, the only remaining member of the Fellowship who’d managed to stay by his side.

2 He Became Increasingly Mean

When fans first encountered Frodo in Fellowship of the Ring, he was a smiling, good-humored hobbit who enjoyed fireworks and ale with his friends. In The Two Towers, he turned petulant and began to berate Sam for his mistrust of Gollum and his directions to Mordor.

In Return of the King, he told Sam to “go home,” not out of concern for Sam’s well-being, but because he wanted to be alone with the Ring. Sam told him that he could see how the Ring had changed him, but Frodo didn’t want to hear it.

1 HE GAVE INTO THE RING OF POWER

In The Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo got a taste for the Ring of Power when he used it to turn invisible from the Nazgul hunting him and his hobbit friends. From that moment on, it called to him and he became more seduced by its power.

In The Two Towers, he became increasingly foul-tempered with Sam due to the Ring’s influence, despite the fact that Sam protected him from Gollum and the Dead Marshes. In Return of the King, he got all the way to Mount Doom, and if Gollum hadn’t bitten the ring off his finger and fallen in, he wouldn’t have destroyed it.
