In a blow to the Fellowship, Amazon has canceled its Lord of the Rings MMO title that was announced a couple of years ago. The devastating news regarding the highly-anticipated Lord of the Rings game is among many unfortunate bad blows to the conglomerate’s gaming division, which has yet to release a successful AAA game.
Amazon first announced the game in October 2019, unrelated to the incredibly costly TV adaptation of The Lord of the Rings. The show and game, regardless of concrete ties, would’ve still made for great synergy from Amazon and was really a no-brainer. Whether or not the success of either would’ve allowed for a cross-over eventually is unclear, but it seems Amazon has no plans to continue expanding Tolkien’s fantasy world in the realm of video games at this time.
The news of the cancelation came by the way of Bloomberg, citing a recent deal with Tencent as the reason it fell apart. Tencent had acquired Leyou Technologies Holdings, a studio working on The Lord of the Rings MMO with Amazon Game Studios, which reportedly led to a dispute during contract negotiations. The cancelation marks more bad news out of Amazon Game Studios, which was recently the subject of a damming report that revealed bad leadership, workplace culture, and faulty in-house technology. Amazon issued a statement to Bloomberg noting its disappointment. “We love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers,” said the spokesperson.
Although budgets and development time weren’t revealed, the amount of time and money invested into a project tied to such a major IP couldn’t have been small. This is a major loss for Amazon on multiple levels and will likely result in the team trying to find ways to repurpose assets into other projects. The Lord of the Rings cancelation is the fifth game to be killed off during its development at Amazon Game Studios, which can’t be cheap.
Although Amazon’s incoming CEO recently doubled down on its commitment to its gaming division, there’s clearly a larger issue that needs to be figured out. Even though Amazon has tons of money to throw around, it’s not productive for its developers and doesn’t actually solve the issues with its management. Whether or not the loss of this MMO version of The Lord of the Rings will be a wake-up call to Amazon’s leadership remains to be seen, but it just lost a project that could’ve made it a big player in the gaming industry.
