Lord of the Rings: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart

Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings are two of the most popular fantasy series of all time. Here’s how their characters match up across franchises.

It can be said that Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings are two of the most popular fantasy series of all time. There are many similarities that can be drawn between these two franchises as they are both drawn on classic storytelling and mythic tropes.

While The Lord of the Rings did come out decades before Harry Potter, it’s interesting to think of the characters from each series that are counterparts to one another. Here are the characters that make the most sense as matches of one another.

10 Grima: Peter Pettigrew

Both Grima and Peter Pettigrew have a very similar feeling about them. They are both described as being grimy and unappealing, and they both remind people around them or rodents because of their sniveling natures.

They both also serve a dark lord and have resentment towards their master because of the way they are treated.

9 Gollum: Dobby

Dobby and Gollum have a lot of differences. For one thing, Dobby is a godly character who helps Harry and is rather endearing. Gollum on the other hand, is mostly evil, although not entirely, creature who doesn’t actually care about Frodo.

But, the main reason these two are counterparts is that they look quite similar in a way that makes it likely Gollum inspired Dobby’s appearance.

8 Arwen: Hermione Granger

Hermione was a hard person to match to a Lord of the Rings character because there just aren’t that many female characters in the series. Most of the women from Lord of the Rings are just side characters or love interests while Hermione takes a much more active and important role in Harry Potter.

However, seeing as both of these women are smart and caring women. This is the best counterpart that could be made for Arwen.

7 Eowyn: Ginny

While Eowyn could definitely also remind fans of Hermione, she is a little bit more like Ginny because of her tenacity and just the general vibe that she gives off.

While Ginny isn’t one of the main trio, she does do what she can to fight against Voldemort and even helps restart Dumbledore’s Army. Eowyn is also a fierce woman who goes against the norms of her society to fight for what she believes in.

6 Gimli: Fred or George Weasley

Gimli, at least in the films, largely functions as the comic relief of the Fellowship in a similar way to how Fred And George function in Harry Potter.

Plus, they all have red hair. While very different, the fact that they are both hilarious and like to joke around makes Gimli seem the most like Fred or George. Plus, Gimli and the twins both do their best to fight against the evil in their worlds and help other people.

5 Galadriel: Professor McGonagall

Galadriel is an extremely powerful elf who has magical abilities and can be rather enigmatic. In these ways, she is most like McGonagall.

They are both powerful and skilled women who are a little bit underrated by other characters and fans. Plus, they both have lived long lives which means they have a great deal of wisdom and experience that they can offer to others around them. And, they are both rather intimidating.

4 Sauron: Lord Voldemort

This is a rather obvious comparison because both Sauron and Voldemort are the ultimate antagonists from their series. They are the personification of evil and both called dark lords.

Also, both of these characters lose their power at one point and lose their corporeal form while they wait to gain power again. Plus, they both have parts of their souls kept in rings as Voldermot had the Slytherin ring and Sauron had the One Ring.

3 Gandalf: Dumbledore

This is another obvious comparison that many fans have made over the years. Both Gandalf and Dumbledore are the classic mentor figures who are rather mysterious, a little charming, and the ones who direct the hero to their destiny.

It’s obvious that Dumbledore was based on Gandalf and other characters like him, and these two are parallels in many ways.

2 Sam: Ron Weasley

Samwise was a bit hard to find a counterpart for because he doesn’t have a personality that’s similar to Ron’s. However, because of their function in the story, it makes the most sense to put these two as matches. Ron and Sam are both the hero’s closest confidants.

They help the hero of a hate story fight against evil and reach their goal. However, while both are loyal, Sam is more loyal overall than Ron.

1 Frodo: Harry Potter

Frodo and Harry are obvious counterparts because they are both the protagonists of their respective series. They are two characters that are designed to defeat dark lords and save the world.

Plus, they even share similarities in appearance as they both have dark hair and light eyes. More similarities include that both of their parents are dead and that they come from wealthy families. Not to mention that the actors look very similar.
