During its time, there was no question that Lost was television’s most interesting and most talked-about show. The mystery series knew how to leave its fans with more questions than answers, so viewers everywhere were left discussing it for days after each episode aired. It led to some wild theories though only some paid off.

At times, Lost was groundbreaking and told excellent stories but at other times, it did have points where it dragged on or when the audience became frustrated. While it was overall a beloved show with rave reviews, there are times when it was a mixed bag and it led to some seasons feeling more fulfilled and better than the others.

6 Season 6

Sticking the landing when it comes to a show like Lost can be a near-impossible task. The series had built up so much lore and mystery that explaining it all just wasn’t going to happen. Alas, the final season of Lost was often more frustrating than satisfying. One reason for the lackluster elements was the concept of the “Flash-Sideways” gimmick. Lost often employed flashbacks and even flash-forwards but this one seemed to be an alternate timeline where Oceanic 815 actually landed safely.

It turned out that it was a sort of limbo and led to the characters reuniting in the afterlife but getting there wasn’t all that interesting for many fans. On the island itself, there were issues. The Man in Black being the Smoke Monster/John Locke was strange, having Jin and Sun reunite only to die soon after was maligned, and Sayid’s whole storyline was a question mark. “Across The Sea” was also meant to answer a lot about the show’s lore but didn’t really do that.

5 Season 3

On paper, season 3 should’ve been something truly special. The show was really digging deep into the lore and after two seasons of totally shocking audiences, it was time to get some answers. Season 3 opened with a bang, as “A Tale of Two Cities” revealed that The Others were way more civilized than everyone believed. The problem was that the show seemed to slow down immediately after that and delivered some of its most disliked installments. Other than “Flashes Before Your Eyes,” a lot of this felt like the show had stalled.

“Stranger in a Strange Land,” an episode about Jack getting his tattoos, was the height of the series killing time. At the time, the showrunners weren’t sure when things would end. The second half of the season, after the announcement that the show would last three more seasons, was met with much more acclaim. “The Man Behind The Curtain” gave answers regarding Ben Linus, the storyline of Charlie’s impending death was emotional, and the finale, “Through The Looking Glass,” is one of the best episodes in history.

4 Season 5

Lost was always something of a sci-fi show but they really leaned into that concept with season 5. The fourth season saw Ben literally move the island to another physical location, which also caused it to jump through different eras, introducing time travel aspects to the series in the fifth season. The audience got to see how things were going off the island but also what it was like during the Dharma Initiative days.

Characters like Jin, Sawyer, and Juliet lived in the ’70s, while Jack, Kate, Hurley, and others made the call to return to the island. John Lock’s death, detailed in the great “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham,” was a highlight, as was the two-part finale, “The Incident.” In a show filled with twists and turns, there might not have been a harder season to predict than the fifth.

3 Season 2

While the aforementioned opening of season 3 was something special, it’s difficult to top season 2’s beginning. “Man of Science, Man of Faith” started with what looked like a guy’s average morning routine, only to reveal that it was someone living in the hatch, which had been a huge mystery in season 1. That set the tone for a season filled with incredible moments and surprising twists.

Like season 3, this did have a few episodes that could be considered filler. “Dave” and “S.O.S.” both kind of feel that way. However, this season also introduced Ben Linus, gave fans the first real look at The Others, and brought in characters from the back of Oceanic 815 who had it even rougher on the island in the fantastic “The Other 48 Days.” The shocking ending to “Two For The Road,” where Michael killed Ana Lucia and Libby, remains one of TV’s best twists.

2 Season 4

Season 3 wrapped up with Jack yelling, “We have to go back!” to Kate and let the world know that some characters managed to escape the island. That set up the idea of flash-forwards, which were a huge part of season 4, and marked the change the show needed to avoid being stale. This season also being shorter, at 14 episodes, made for tighter storytelling. The flash-forwards led to plenty of shocks and the new characters worked well.

Frank Lapidus, Charlotte Lewis, and Daniel Faraday arriving on the island threw in even more of a wrench into the show’s complicated lore. This season also saw the return of Michael and showcased what happened to Ben when he left the island but there were two legitimate high points above all. There’s the finale, “There’s No Place Like Home,” which again delivered and featured a stunning ending showing that Locke had died, and there’s also “The Constant,” which many consider the show’s greatest episode.

1 Season 1

As great as it was to peel back the layers of Lost and learn more about what was going on with the island, nothing topped when questions were first arising. The entire inaugural season was remarkable in that it detailed how unique this place was, while also explaining who these characters were. Who could forget finding out that Kate was a fugitive or that Locke was paralyzed before the plane crashed? What about the polar bear in “Pilot” or the first appearance of the Smoke Monster?

Those were things that could only work during season 1. It gave every main character at least one episode to shine and help the audience to understand what led them to become who they are on the island, all while lobbing up mysteries about the setting. Some of the relationships formed lasted until the end and are iconic. From deaths to births to the hatch to the Others, everyone was hooked.
