Lost In Space The Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

The Netflix original series Lost in Space has just returned for its third and final season. At the end of the second season, the Robinsons have been separated following an attack on The Resolute. John and Maureen stay behind to fend off a horde of robots, and Judy captains a mission to send the children of the 24th colony through a space rift to safety. Naturally, things fail, and the characters are stuck on different planets. One year later, the stakes are higher, and the Robinsons must find their way back to each other.

Given the scientific nature of the series, most of the characters need to have some degree of knowledge to survive. They have to deal with unfamiliar planets and their lifeforms, threats within their colony, and of course, the danger of being lost in space. All the characters in Lost in Space are smart in various ways, but some are more knowledgeable than others.

10 June Harris/Dr. Zoe Smith

Lost In Space The Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Introduced as Dr. Smith, June Harris is an ex-con and master manipulator posing as a therapist. She stole her younger sister’s identity to join the colonist group and stole a doctor’s identity when she got caught.

June isn’t knowledgeable in the way that most of the other characters are. She can’t help with operating a ship and knows nothing about the many threats they face. The one thing she is great at is manipulating people and using them to her advantage. However, even that stops working once people start to realize that she’s not who she claims to be, and she winds up having to commit more criminal acts to dodge accountability.

9 Vijay Dhar

Son of Victor, the 24th colony’s representative, Vijay is introduced as a quiet teenage boy who doesn’t go against his father, even if he disagrees with him. When he meets the Robinsons, Penny, in particular, he becomes brave and more assertive.

Vijay may not be the smartest, and would rather be doing a number of other things rather than follow orders from his father, but does have some knowledge. When he spots the Robinson kids coming back from hiding the Robot, he agrees to keep their meeting a secret from his father. Vijay is also the one to tell his father about the black hole that will swallow the planet they’re on, which prompts the survivors of the crash to find a way to escape. Although it angers Penny, who swore him to secrecy, he believed it was the right thing to do.

8 The Robot

After Will saved the Robot in the first episode, it returned the favor and continued its heroics by saving his life, reuniting with his family, and saving Judy’s life.

More advanced than its original counterpart, the Robot is smart and complex. It knew that The Resolute was using technology stolen from its planet, and caused the attack. It has a limited scope of communication, but after being saved by Will, manages to form a strong bond with him, and learns to protect him and his fellow humans. It has extraordinary strength and unique abilities that allow it to assist and protect the Robinsons. It senses danger and easily takes out many different threats. The one major flaw the Robot has is that it’s easily manipulated by others who want to use it for malicious purposes.

7 Don West

Lost In Space The Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Ship mechanic and smuggler of luxury goods, Don is great at handling machinery and keeping a low profile while getting the job done. He was on The Resolute when his crew’s Jupiter crashed on an unknown planet, and wound up becoming an honorary member of the Robinson family after agreeing to help them find a way to get back to the ship.

In some ways, Don feels more like comedic relief than an intelligent character. He cracks jokes and often balks at the idea of responsibility. During a conversation with Judy, he shows that he is smart, just in a different way. Don believes in doing enough to get the job done, and not bringing too much attention to himself, as it often leads to trouble in his line of work. In the second season finale, he kept John and Maureen hidden after a murder attempt by intelligence officer Hastings and helps them seize control over The Resolute after his attempts to leave everyone else stranded.

6 Will Robinson

The INFJ of the Robinson family, Will is empathetic and always thinks of others. He often worries that he’s not as smart as the rest of his family, but he always tries to make sure he does the right thing in any situation.

In the first episode, Will shows his smarts in his own way, when he saves the Robot from burning in a forest fire. He believed that if only one could survive, it should be the Robot, as it can fend for itself, whereas Will was stranded with no way of contacting his family. When the Robot saves his life in return, he finds that he has a new ally. When the family reaches The Resolute, Will shows Hastings how he’s able to communicate with the Robot and tries to show him how they can work together. He follows his emotions often, and can easily be manipulated by others, but he has a big heart and a strong desire to help others.

5 Penny Robinson

Middle child Penny is considered the odd one in the family. She loves to write and prefers to have fun over dealing with all the dangers her family encounters. She appears tough to others but has a soft side under her sarcastic exterior.

Despite not being as outwardly intelligent as the others, Penny is creative and resourceful, often thinking of ideas that others don’t. While her parents, Will, and the Robot are investigating another crash site, she sees a storm approaching, and takes their Chariot to rescue them, knowing they won’t be able to escape otherwise. Penny is the one who figures out Dr. Smith’s true identity, although she’s unable to prove it. She’s also shown herself to be capable of teaming up with others for the greater good of the colony, even if she dislikes them.

4 John Robinson

Lost In Space The Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Former Navy S.E.A.L., John joined Maureen and their children on the journey to their new home planet. Despite their estrangement, he remains devoted to his family and does everything he can to keep them safe.

John is the commander in situations of danger and stress, often clashing with Maureen in the beginning. While he’s not an engineer like his wife, his military knowledge gives him an advantage over some of the survivors. John excels in combat and regularly displays his tactical knowledge. He thinks and acts quickly, doing what he can to reach the best outcome of any situation. John also has a lot of emotional intelligence and encourages his children to be accountable, while also being in tune with how they feel.

3 Judy Robinson

Lost In Space The Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

The eldest of the Robinson kids, Judy is the doctor of the family. She’s an overachiever and perfectionist, who tries to do everything right the first time around. She carries a large amount of responsibility, taking care of the other survivors as well as being in charge of her siblings in their parents’ absence.

Sometimes Judy struggles with making unpleasant decisions, even if it’s for the greater good of the survivors. Despite this, she’s proven her intelligence on multiple occasions. She excels at nearly everything she does, often causing instances of jealousy between her and Penny. She is also one of the first to learn that Dr. Smith is lying to everyone about her identity. Judy has one of the best episodes in the series, where she races against time to save John, showing off her athleticism and brainpower.

2 Angela Goddard

Lost In Space The Main Characters Ranked By Intelligence

Angela is an engineer and fellow survivor struggling with PTSD after witnessing the death of her husband on The Resolute. She is loyal and objective and a brilliant scientist.

Angela is one of the smartest characters in the series, being accomplished in the same field as Maureen. She neutralizes a rust virus threatening the safety and lives of the colony members, and along with Judy, is one of the other characters who saw through Dr. Smith’s facade. Her only flaw is that she was eventually convinced by Dr. Smith to seek revenge on the Robot for killing her husband, although her attempt is successful.

1 Maureen Robinson

Maureen takes charge throughout the series, being an engineer and serving as the mission commander for the Jupiter 2. She wants to take her children to Alpha Centauri, where they will live a new life on a healthier planet. Maureen’s love for her family will be a big factor in the third season, with her biggest goal being to reunite with them.

Although her emotions sometimes get in the way, Maureen remains the most intelligent character in the series. She loves her children and will do anything to protect them, but keeps her emotions on the inside. She takes an authoritative approach to tasks and doesn’t tolerate anything that would be considered distracting or unnecessary. Maureen isn’t fond of criticism, but she’s willing to collaborate with others on ideas. She also encourages Penny and Will when they don’t believe in their own abilities.
