In reality television, the quest to find love continues beyond The Bachelor. On CBS, there is the US spinoff of Love Island, which had a rocky start after premiering to poor ratings. Nonetheless, the show carried on and turned things around. More tuned in and watched “Islanders” stay at the villa and find love.

Today, the show has even attracted the likes of Khloe Kardashian who has revealed her favorite Love Island USA stars. And as we wait to see if a third season is coming, we thought it would be fun to reveal some behind-the-scenes secrets from the show.

10 The Women Do Their Own Makeup

Just like other reality show, contestants are responsible for making sure they are camera-ready. There is no glam squad for the ladies. Instead, they do their makeup on their own. While speaking with Pop Sugar, host Arielle Vandenberg even remarked, “I feel like the whole show you’re watching them do their makeup.” On the other hand, Vandenberg herself has a makeup artist although her face doesn’t really require touchup because her face never sweats despite the weather. Meanwhile, the women have also developed another hobby while retouching their makeup. According to Vandenberg, they are typically “gossiping and talking about boys.”

9 Couples Share A Bed From The Beginning

On the show, finding true love means getting intimate as soon as possible. Just like in the UK version of the show, the couples have to share a bed, although everyone shares one big room. “That is how the house is set up,” executive producer David Eilenberg explained during an interview with USA Today.

However, if a contestant is feeling uncomfortable about the setup, they can always speak up. In which case, Eilenberg says “they don’t.” The same thing happens if a couple ends up arguing.

8 There Is Always A Backup Cast

Reality shows have a degree of unpredictability, at least behind the scenes. As you may recall, Love Island USA season 2 contestant Noah Purvis was suddenly cut from the show after failing to disclose that he used to work on gay adult films. It may have caused some fan uproar, but the show continued, nonetheless. This is precisely why the producers of Love Island prefer to have a backup cast on standby. “When I say backups, I mean people that we’re planning to use on the show,” executive producer Simon Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter.

7 There Is A Limit To Alcohol Consumption In The Villa

In some reality shows, such as The Bachelor, alcohol consumption is reportedly encouraged so drinks are free-flowing throughout production. This is not the case when it comes to Love Island USA. In fact, producers only allow the contestants to enjoy a maximum of two drinks each night. Eilenberg explained to USA Today that the show is “very much against excessive alcohol use.” Sure, they want the contestants to enjoy themselves while they mingle with each other. At the same time, however, they also encourage “actual coherent conversation and connection” among them.

When it was announced that Love Island season 2 would film at a quarantined location in Las Vegas, it didn’t exactly specify how the cast would prepare for production. It turns out all the contestants had to agree to be sequestered early on for health and safety concerns. That means isolating in a hotel for at least a couple of weeks before they start filming. Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter that their COVID consultants that “along with testing, a two-week quarantine is the best way to deal with it”

If you think the NBA bubble was intense, wait till you get more details on the Love Island USA bubble. You may have gotten some idea about this after Vandenberg got real about life in the Vegas bubble. That said, the bubble didn’t just apply to their Vegas hotel. It extended to some location shoots too. When it came to outside dates, Thomas told The Hollywood Reporter that “people outside the bubble” would leave “so that we could come in.” And when the contestants arrived at a location, they only interacted with crew in the bubble.

Even when it comes to reality shows, music plays a critical role in setting the tone and mood of the show. Determining the right song for an episode is a lengthy process, one that starts early on in the production process. “We start clearing song for potential use months out,” Thomas revealed during an interview with Give Me My Remote. The Love Island USA team is also fortunate to have the likes of Ben Thursby-Palmer and Iona Mackenzie around. Both worked on The X Factor so they have “extensive music experience.”

One of the things that Love Island USA winner Caleb Corprew has been up to since leaving the villa is doing whatever he wants when he feels likes it. It might not sound like a big deal but considering his experience in filming the show, he’s probably relishing his freedom today.

“One other thing that I really struggled with was just having very little control over the structure of my day,” Corprew told People. He even said that he wasn’t free to decide what time he would wake up or when he would eat meals at the villa.

2 The Show Has A 24-Hour Turnaround

Unlike a lot of reality shows, Love Island USA strives to deliver the latest episode to viewers almost right after it happens. While speaking with Give Me My Remote, Thomas revealed that each episode of the show is made “in a little under 24 hours and that’s including shooting.” That means fans get an update from the villa as the contestants’ relationships progress in real-time. On a lot of other reality shows, viewers watch the episodes weeks of months after the final episode was shot. And if participants discuss the show, they may violate their contract.

1 The Show Was Purposely Toned Down, Compared To The UK Version

With the concept of the show, it’s quite easy to claim that Love Island appears to be the most risqué show on CBS today. If you must know though, the producers chose to tone things down for the show’s US version. After all, their episodes can’t air if they don’t. While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Eilenberg explained, “Of course, we’re going to conform to broadcast standards.” Complying to the standards also means that the production team would “have some bleeping obligations” in case foul language is used. That’s something the UK show doesn’t have to worry about.
