Today, Electronic Arts looked back on the year with the release of “2021: A Year In Gaming,” a summary of different stats for various EA titles – including Mass Effect and The Sims 4. A reflection on the year, EA’s summary aims to celebrate the players as much as the games themselves. EA has published some of the world’s highest-played games, from popular EA sports game franchises to massive multiplayer online titles like Knockout City and Apex Legends.

With over 500 million players, EA franchises garner a lot of playtime every year from gamers all around the world. Two of their popular franchises – The Sims and Mass Effect – have been around for a long time and garnered a large fanbase, with several entries in both series. Currently on its fourth entry, The Sims is a series based around user creation, where players can design Sims and their homes and play out their lives however they’d like, sometimes making incredibly elaborate Sims creations. Mass Effect, with three main entries and several spin-offs, is a science fiction RPG with a rich narrative where gamers play as Commander Shepard, setting off on various missions set in the backdrop of space.

EA released “2021: A Year In Gaming” on their website today after teasing it on Twitter. The post includes s a retrospective infographic about gamers and the titles they chose to play this year – as well as how they played them. Players spent a staggering amount of time playing The Sims 4 this year, clocking in over a billion hours of playtime split between the game’s Create-A-Sim, Build, and Live modes. EA commented on the massive amount of time gamers spent with The Sims 4, saying, “The Sims inspires us to make art imitate life and create a world that’s unique to each of us. When real life experiences were limited, players recreated family, friends and social gatherings they weren’t able to attend in-person.” Not only did players create a lot in the game this year, they shared tons of content with others, with 11.3 million gallery uploads and 201 million gallery downloads. The Mass Effect stats focus more on character choices than time spent, noting things like the fact 23% of players never changed their character’s name from the default provided by the EA title. It also offers insight into how gamers played through Mass Effect 2’s infamous Suicide Mission and how many squad members they managed to keep alive.

Summarizing a user’s habits over the course of the year has become a popular trend for for a myriad of services, but they’re usually focused on the individual rather than a community. EA’s choice to compile their stats by game into one lump sum of data (instead of delivering individual stats to the user) changes the nature of the reflection in a unique way. Presenting what users did as a whole for each title creates a sense of unity and accomplishment that’s absent with individual stats.

It’s easy for players to never venture outside of their particular gaming niche – FIFA fans probably aren’t very cognizant of trends in The Sims community and vice-versa. EA’s “2021: A Year In Gaming” offers a new perspective on how gamers play their favorite games, and offers a wider scope on the gaming community than what many people would seek out on their own. EA’s goal was to create something that celebrates all types of gamers and their own definition of what it means to play, and it absolutely succeeds.
