Originally slated for August, Mafia: Definitive Edition has been delayed to September 2020. The franchise’s latest entry, Mafia 3, became the fastest-selling 2K game when it released in 2016, delving into the life of a soldier returning home from the Vietnam War as he embarks on a quest for revenge. The onus was on players to expand the protagonist Lincoln Clay’s empire through the conquest of opposing factions’ operations.

Earlier in 2020, Mafia 2 and 3 definitive editions were leaked, later revealed as the Mafia Trilogy. The Mafia Trilogy released the Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 definitive editions in late May 2020, though, gamers eager to get their hands on Mafia: Definitive Edition have to wait a bit longer since it’s getting the full remake treatment, complete with enhanced graphics, updated engine, and new scripts. Enhanced versions of the second and third games, however, offer the full package of each game’s DLC and are currently available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The official Mafia: Trilogy Twitter page revealed today that Mafia: Definitive Edition has been delayed from August to September 2020. The new official release date is September 25, 2020, almost a month later than the original release date of August 28. Developer Hangar 13 and 2K Games explained that COVID-19 has made development much more difficult, and rather than sacrifice quality by releasing the game on its original date, the companies feel the delay is necessary to remain true to the coveted experience. To placate fans in the meantime, a new 15-second teaser trailer was also tweeted. Fans will have the opportunity to receive “an extended look at Mafia: Definitive Edition’s gameplay” on July 22.

It’s no secret that the pandemic has stretched developers thin and made release dates less solid than normal. However, it’s also not beneficial to pretend developers and publishers have difficulty meeting release dates even without COVID-19 getting in the way. Rockstar’s L.A. Noire was delayed repeatedly over the course of seven years, Blizzard’s Diablo III had 11 years of delays, and CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077 was recently delayed again by another two months. Delays have been a historical par for the course with video game development, and they inevitably come with mixed feelings of disappointment and understanding from fans.

Naturally, gamers want to get their hands on their most anticipated titles and will express their frustration with developers when there are delays. However, many players also understand there are obstacles that come up, and they would much rather have a quality experience in which glitches are as minimalized as possible as opposed to a “bugfest” that breaks the game.
