MAFS Pastor Cal Says Chris Was a ‘Different Person’ During Casting

Chris Williams II is one of the most controversial grooms in Married at First Sight history. Fans are wondering how he passed the background check and personality evaluations. Married at First Sight expert Pastor Cal Roberson rejected claims that the show purposely cast Chris for the drama and alleged that the casting team was fooled by Chris, who acted like a “different person” once the cameras started rolling.

Chris married Paige Banks on season 12 of Married at First Sight. After saying their vows in front of family and friends, the newlyweds traveled to Las Vegas for their honeymoon. Despite initiating sex with Paige, Chris told her that he wasn’t physically attracted to her. While in Vegas, Chris revealed that his ex-fiancée had recently reached out to him to tell him that she was six weeks pregnant. The timeline of his ex’s pregnancy would mean that she and Chris had been intimate while he was fully involved in the Married at First Sight casting and vetting process.

In an appearance on the radio show The Frank Ski Show with Nina Brown (via Reality TV World), Pastor Cal set the record straight on why Chris was even cast in the first place. He reiterated that the show’s vetting process is extremely rigorous and takes four to six weeks to complete. He claimed that the experts were as “surprised” and “pissed” as viewers were when Chris began insulting Paige’s looks and confessed to her that he was expecting a baby with his ex-fiancée. However, Pastor Cal said that the fact that Chris was engaged only a couple of months before applying to the show did not raise any red flags for the experts. “[Chris] was not the first person who’s ever done that,” Pastor Cal said. “And some people who have done that have been successful and in fact are still even married.” But despite defending Chris’ casting, Pastor Cal still expressed his disappointment at the MAFS groom’s behavior: “First of all, as a father, it’s infuriating. As a man, it’s painful to see that.”

As Chris’ treatment of Paige continues to worsen and his relationship with his ex-fiancée becomes more complicated, fans have been directing their shock and anger at the Married at First Sight experts. Although Pastor Cal claims that they were tricked by Chris, it’s difficult for fans to believe that a team comprised of a sociologist (Dr. Pepper Schwartz), a psychotherapist (Dr. Viviana Coles), and a professional marriage coach (Pastor Cal Roberson) would have been so easily fooled. Dr. Viviana has previously defended the team of experts as well, but fans still believe that the experts should be held accountable for putting Paige’s emotional well-being in jeopardy.

On episode 7 of this season, Pastor Cal sat down with each of the couples after they returned from their honeymoons. Chris had informed Paige that he wanted to seek a divorce and reconcile with his ex-fiancée, but after their session with Pastor Cal, Chris seemed to leave the door open in regards to his relationship with Paige as well.
