Magneto Claims Captain Americas Shield As Marvels Last Hero

Robert Kirkman’s Marvel Zombies series began with the end of Magneto, the Master of Magnetism. Trapped and alone as the final mutant standing in a world overrun by super-powered zombies who were once the heroes of their dimension, Magneto made sure his last stand was worthy of his legacy. Furthermore, the powerful mutant ends up stealing an iconic weapon for his final defense: Captain America’s shield.

In the first few pages of Marvel Zombies #1, Magneto is being hunted by an entire horde of zombies who were once Avengers and Defenders of their world, set in an alternate dimension of the standard 616 Marvel Universe. However, now they’re just hungry, with Magneto serving as one of the last few morsels left on the planet for them to consume. Never one to go down without a fight in any dimension, Magneto determines to fight the horde off until he absolutely can’t anymore, sending a massive volley of metal and scrap to shred the zombies to pieces, but more keep coming. While he flees the area, Spider-Man and Captain America give chase, and Magneto makes the most of the opportunity.

Using Captain America’s shield to shear off half his head, Magneto takes Cap’s shield for himself using it to great effect as he tries to escape the horde. As he runs, he gets a transmission from survivors on Asteroid M. Believing that he was the only one left, the news of survivors and a chance to restore humanity to the world gives Magneto a renewed hope and a second wind to keep on fighting.

When Hawkeye catches up and finds him, Magneto throws the shield and decapitates Clint Barton, but is still shot in the side with one of his arrows. This gives Cap the opening to get his shield back, but Magneto still uses his powers over the shield to fling Cap away. Attempting to bury the rest of the horde in concrete and steel, Magneto takes the time to challenge them with words claiming that he’ll outlive them all thanks to his powers. This proves to be a fatal mistake, as it gives The Wasp a chance to fly in small under his notice and take a bite out of his neck. At that point it’s all over. The horde of former heroes swarm Magneto’s body, and none of them are willing to share with one another. Magneto’s final words were still one of defiance, saying that he hoped they’d choke on him. With that, Hulk and Thor rip him in half and the horde feasts on his remains.

While it’s a horrific and grisly way to go for the Master of Magnetism, Magneto’s last stand was still worthy of his legacy as one of the most powerful mutants to have ever lived. He also got to die with the hope that humanity might live on at his asteroid base, and it was extremely cool to see Magneto wield such an iconic weapon that complimented his powers so well in the first issue of Marvel Zombies.
