Metal Gear Solid 10 Plot Twists That Everyone Saw Coming

The Metal Gear Solid franchise has a reputation for complex, often convoluted storylines, conspiracy theories, and massive, mind-bending plot twists. Regarding the latter, some of those twists have been massive revelations, while others were incredibly easy to spot from a distance. It’s those that gave the franchise its signature style, even if it occasionally backfired.

These plot twists were undone by the writing, which was usually so obvious that only the most naïve had trouble spotting them. Nevertheless, there’s a certain charm in how each one helped to shape the Metal Gear Solid games and create a legacy of fun and interesting plot arcs that had massive ramifications for the series.

10 Solid & Liquid’s Biological Connection

The first Metal Gear Solid game didn’t exactly hide the connection between lead protagonist Solid Snake and his FOXHOUND adversary Liquid Snake. From the very first opening cinematic, hints were dropped that these two shared more than just a codename.

In a relatively short space of time, players determined that these two shared a biological bond of some sort. Though many initially believed that Liquid was a long-lost brother, the truth was far more complex. Both Solid and Liquid were genetic clones of the nefarious Big Boss, the villain of the original Metal Gear games.

9 The Cyborg Ninja’s Identity

Metal Gear Solid’s mysterious and intriguing cyborg ninjas became a major hit thanks to the original’s appearance in the first game. However, it didn’t take long for fans to figure out the man under the mask. When he and Snake square off for the first time, the latter determines that it’s his old war buddy Frank Jaeger, codenamed “Gray Fox,” who was thought to be dead.

Later, Snake is interrupted through the CODEC by a mysterious individual calling himself “Deepthroat,” who offers helpful intel. The fact that the two characters share the same voice, plus the garbled CODEC visual proved to be a dead giveaway. In the end, Jaeger and Deepthroat were revealed to be the same person.

8 Master Miller & Liquid Snake

This one was rather easy to spot, and it came courtesy of the first Metal Gear Solid game. Shortly after being introduced to Liquid Snake, players are greeted over CODEC by Kazuhira Miller, otherwise known as “Master Miller.” The character’s role was expanded on in the prequel title Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

The big reveal comes near the end of the game when players learn that Liquid was impersonating Miller the entire time in order to manipulate Snake’s progression. Having Cam Clarke voice both characters let the cat out of the bag early, and it would have been less obvious had another voice actor been cast for the dual roles who did not possess such an established signature voice.

7 The FOXDIE Virus

Metal Gear Solid focused heavily on a subplot where prominent characters in the story are killed off violently in sudden, mysterious fashion. The first to go is FOXHOUND member Decoy Octopus, who successfully copied and impersonated DARPA chief Donald Anderson. Even from the start, the suddenness of his heart attack seemed suspect.

The next to die was Armstech President Kenneth Baker, which effectively let the secret slip. Two identical deaths by sudden heart attack, plus Baker scorning the Pentagon was all the evidence players needed that Solid Snake was a walking killer virus.

6 The Big Shell/Shadow Moses Connection

Though the finer details of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty were well hidden, the overall “second half” of the game was easy to deduce. Once players took control of controversial new protagonist Raiden, a series of events unfolded that were suspiciously similar to the preceding game in the series.

This was partly on purpose so that the secretive Patriots could test an AI known as GW, which was designed to manipulate information and shape public consciousness. The final act of the game shows the plan slowly unravels in a particularly frightening fashion. However, the events leading up to it, from boss battles to FOXDIE deaths, were pretty obvious.

5 The Unconvincing Arm

Revolver Ocelot’s return in MGS 2 came with a surprise twist that ended up becoming one of Metal Gear Solid’s wildest moments. Apparently, he had grafted Liquid Snake’s arm onto his own body after losing his hand to Gray Fox in the first MGS game. This caused his mind to seemingly be overtaken by the arm, effectively allowing Liquid Snake to live again.

Once the initial shock wore off, players had some tough questions. It was obvious that a simple appendage could not have taken over another’s mind, even in this oddball universe. It was eventually revealed that Ocelot used psychotherapy and nanomachines to make it look like Liquid’s consciousness had taken over in order to fool the Patriots one last time.

4 The Boss’s Loyalties

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater didn’t do the best job trying to convince players that the Boss was a traitor to America. This might have had something to do with how freely the game borrowed from classic spy films from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, making it all-too-easy to see.

It didn’t take very long for players to determine that there was more to the Boss’s story than met the eye. She neither betrayed her country nor defected to the enemy side; in truth, she was a double agent trying to acquire the Philosopher’s Legacy for the American government while preventing a nuclear exchange in the process.

3 Ocelot’s Entire Character Arc

The first MGS game introduced players to the infamous Revolver Ocelot, a torture specialist and a crack shot with a six-shooter. He’s later revealed to be one of the most important characters in the story, which would build with subsequent sequel and prequel arcs. By the time the dust settles in the first MGS game, it’s established that Ocelot is a double agent.

That plot arc was easy to spot, and it became more apparent as time went on. Metal Gear Solid 3’s younger version of Ocelot also displayed the same manipulative and devious personality as his older self. His overall post-MGS1 character arc is one Metal Gear Solid storyline that fans were disappointed by, as it made major, unprecedented changes to the character.

2 The Psycho Mantis Connection In The Phantom Pain

Perhaps it was the gas mask that tipped everyone off, but it seemed fairly obvious that the young boy known as Tretij Rebenok was the original Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid. The fifth game in the series, The Phantom Pain, took place when Rebenok was far younger, setting up his later FOXHOUND arc.

Rebenok’s mind is influenced by the seething hatred of former GRU Colonel Volgin from Metal Gear Solid 3. His psychic powers would reanimate Volgin, turning him into the terrifying Man on Fire. Rebenok would later encounter the young boy Eli, otherwise known as Liquid Snake, and later adopt his Psycho Mantis codename.

1 Eli & Liquid Snake

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, both Venom Snake and Ocelot eventually cross paths with a 12-year-old child soldier known as Eli. The young boy has it out for Snake, believing him to be his estranged “father.” This was an obvious reference to the Les Enfants Terribles project, the creation of two clones from Big Boss’s DNA.

Physical similarities aside, the sheer hatred Eli felt for Snake was already established in the original Metal Gear Solid, which made it easy to spot where this plot thread was going. Later in the game, Eli becomes a prominent character in the story, setting up his rise as the lead antagonist in the very first MGS game.
