Mandalorian Proves Game of Thrones Was Wrong About Ice Spiders

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2, “Chapter 10 – The Passenger.”

Giant ice spiders were featured in The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2, “Chapter 10 – The Passenger”, proving that Game of Thrones season 8 was wrong not to include similar creatures of its own. “The Passenger” saw Din Djarin, Baby Yoda, and Frog Lady have to make a sudden landing on the ice planet Maldo Kreis. After Frog Lady went for a geothermal bath and Baby Yoda got hungry and ate a spider egg, the group were set upon by countless icy spiders, including one that was particularly giant.

Including ice spiders in The Mandalorian means the live-action Star Wars show does something Game of Thrones could not. The frozen arachnids had long been teased in Westeros, setup by the words of Old Nan back in Game of Thrones season 1, who told tales of the White Walkers riding “ice spiders as big as hounds.” The imagery is both terrifying and tantalizing, but despite the threat of the White Walkers ramping up in season 8, there was no sign of ice spiders of any size, let alone ones as big as hounds.

It was disappointing that Game of Thrones season 8 didn’t include ice spiders, though the showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss did try to explain why, with the latter saying: “‘Big as hounds.’ Didn’t we talk about that for thirty seconds? Sounds good. Looks good on a metal album cover. But once they start moving, what does an ice spider look like? Probably doesn’t look great.” That was somewhat understandable, although, given how great a job Game of Thrones did of bringing its dragons to life and increasing the size and scale of them every season, it didn’t totally mesh. The Mandalorian season 2, episode 2 proves that Game of Thrones could have pulled off ice spiders, because its own giant arachnids look superb and suitably horrifying.

There is, in fairness, a bit of a difference in the exact approach, as the spiders in The Mandalorian don’t appear to be made of ice completely, whereas the ones in Game of Thrones are generally thought to be as such (and appear that way in artistic depictions of them). But given the show pulled off wight dragons and even a wight polar bear, all with a budget believed to be in excess of that of The Mandalorian, then there’s no reason they couldn’t have delivered a take on ice spiders as big as hounds with an undead version of them, even if it had to twist it a bit to work properly. The spiders in The Mandalorian are huge, and move very well, with no problems whatsoever with the design or movement.

Of course, because Game of Thrones was creating dragons, it might have been harder to give the same attention (and budget) to its ice spiders that The Mandalorian does, although that itself is hardly skimping on other areas. The ice spiders in The Mandalorian season 2 were also integral to the episode’s story, whereas in Game of Thrones they would’ve been a nice (in the loosest possible sense) addition to the Long Night plot line, but the former shows just how they could’ve looked, how much of a threat they could be, and how instantly they can help with world and character building, all of which would’ve served Game of Thrones season 8 well.
