The Suicide Squad star Margot Robbie reveals she is ready and eager to play Harley Quinn again in the DC Extended Universe in the near future. Robbie first brought the character to the big screen in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad in 2016 and was one of the few highlights critics singled out for praise in the film. Following this acclaimed outing for the character, multiple follow-up projects were put into development to include Harley as a main character or supporting player.

One such project was the well-received Birds of Prey, which also featured the DCEU introductions of Huntress, Black Canary, Renee Montoya and teenager Cassandra Cain, who in the comics would be one to take on the mantle of Batgirl. Other projects have unfortunately languished in development hell or been scrapped altogether, including a film centered on Robbie’s Harley and Jared Leto’s Joker and a Gotham City Sirens film that is reportedly on hold for the time being. While the actress may be uncertain as to what the future holds for her in the DCEU, Robbie is definitely not ready to give up on Harley on screen any time soon.

In anticipation of her return to the role for The Suicide Squad, Robbie spoke with ET! Online to discuss the latest DCEU film. After initially expressing a desire to take a break for the role due to having shot multiple films with Harley consecutively, the Oscar nominee reveals she is rested and ready to dive back into the mind of the fan-favorite antihero. Check out what Robbie said below:

“I’ve had enough of a break. I’m ready to do her again. I did Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad back-to-back, so that was a lot of Harley all in a one year period, but that was a while ago now. I’m always ready for more Harley!”

Given the consecutive productions of Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad and the manic mindset of the character, it wasn’t much of a surprise for Robbie to initially express a desire to take some kind of break from the role. Additionally, given Warner Bros. and DC Films are still exploring what the future holds for the comic book franchise, no projects have been confirmed to be in development that would immediately require the actress to return to the role. However, with the early critical success of The Suicide Squad and fans’ love for Robbie’s portrayal of Harley, it seemed rather unlikely that her time would come to a close after Gunn’s film, even if the filmmaker chooses to surprise audiences with her death in the film.

It’s also interesting to note that this newfound interest in reprising Harley Quinn after The Suicide Squad could very well stem from Gunn’s interest in making a solo film for the character and having reportedly discussed Robbie’s DCEU future during production. While Robbie may believe a Harley solo film wouldn’t be as fun as her team-ups, the path of growth she began down in Birds of Prey should lead to a number of exciting new avenues for the character in the future. Only time will tell what Gunn and Robbie have in store for fans when The Suicide Squad hits theaters this week.
