Upcoming series The New Pope has added Sharon Stone and Marilyn Manson to its cast. It’s being described as a sequel to Paolo Sorrentino’s The Young Pope, which aired back in 2016 on HBO. The original series followed Jude Law’s character, Lenny Belardo, after he became the first American pope. Diane Keaton also starred as Sister Mary, personal secretary to the Pope. The Young Pope netted a Golden Globe nomination for Law, as well as nominations for Outstanding Cinematography and Outstanding Production Design at the Creative Arts Emmys.

Prior to the news of Stone and Manson’s casting, not much was known about the sequel series. The New Pope will retain some of its original cast, with Law, Silvio Orlando, Cécile de France, and Ludivine Sagnier all returning, and Sorrentino is also on board again to write and direct. John Malkovich has also joined the cast, and a first-look image released in January of Law and Malkovich in matching garments revealed that he’ll play a new pope. The Young Pope finale ended by paving the way for Malkovich’s character.

According to Variety, Stone and Manson will join the cast in the follow-up series, which doesn’t yet have a release date. Both actors were eager to work with Sorrentino and were also fans of the original series. Character details haven’t been released, but their photos from the show at least offer a glimpse out how they’ll look. Stone is pictured with Malkovich’s character, while Manson stands alone in what appears to be the same room. Take a look at the photos below:

Stone is best known for her work in 1992’s Basic Instinct, which led to her first Golden Globe nomination. Recent credits include Agent X, Mosaic, and Netflix’s upcoming Ratched with Sarah Paulson. In addition to his singing career, Manson has appeared on a host of other TV shows, including Californication, Sons of Anarchy, and Salem. He also starred in 2017’s Let Me Make You a Martyr, ironically, as a character named Pope. Jude Law, of course, recently starred in the Marvel blockbuster Captain Marvel as Yon-Rogg, mentor to Brie Larson’s titular hero.

Though The Young Pope didn’t have much success during awards season, it stands to reason that this buzz-worthy casting for The New Pope may turn things around. It also helps that a few years have passed since the first series aired, which hopefully left fans and critics wanting more. The number of anthology series has exploded in recent years, and many of those series have become staples at the Emmys and Golden Globes. American Horror Story is one of the more popular examples, and The New Pope may well follow suit.
