Marvel Changes Entire Phase 4 MCU Movie Release Slate

The entire Phase 4 slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed due to coronavirus. After the conclusion of Phase 3 in 2019, Marvel Studios announced what the next several years of the MCU would look like at San Diego Comic-Con and D23. These announcements began with revealing what films will be released in 2020 and 2021, then Black Panther 2 became the first film to receive an official 2022 release date.

However, the carefully crafted nature of the MCU Phase 4 slate has had to change because of coronavirus. Just like every other studio in Hollywood, Marvel had to adjust their plans for 2020 in light of the outbreak, which meant taking Black Widow out of its May release slot indefinitely. Unlike Marvel’s competition though, one move would likely cause a ripple effect to the entire Phase 4 slate. Although there was a chance that could be avoided, that is not what Disney and Marvel have decided to do.

In order to give Black Widow a new release date, Marvel Studios has announced a complete Phase 4 reshuffling. Black Widow will now come out on November 6, 2020 – taking the date Eternals previously held. As a result, Eternals has moved to February 12, 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to May 7, 2021, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to November 5, 2021, and Thor: Love and Thunder to February 18, 2022. The adjustment also brought about the announcement that Captain Marvel 2 will come out on July 8, 2022.

The changes that Marvel Studios has now made to Phase 4 are substantial, but this might have been the only real option. Finding a new release date for Black Widow was the priority, and although Marvel could’ve tried to fit it in July or August and keep Eternals and the rest of Phase 4 in their original dates, the coronavirus has done more than just close movie theaters. The production on Shang-Chi has been suspended indefinitely, but it was previously reported that Doctor Strange 2’s production was on track to start as planned. If those films aren’t able to complete filming on time, then they wouldn’t be able to hit their old release dates anyway.

Even though this reshuffled Phase 4 MCU slate means fans will have to wait even longer to see a new Marvel Studios movie, at least an additional film was announced as well. Instead of knowing release dates for seven upcoming titles, there are now eight MCU movies with release dates through 2022. What remains to be seen, though, is if the movie delays will change when Marvel’s Disney+ shows are released as well. With The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision, and Loki all stopping production, they might need to be delayed next – especially depending on their connectivity to Phase 4’s MCU movies.
