Warning! Spoilers for The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 below

In the upcoming The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 from Marvel Comics, Iron Man reveals why he couldn’t trust Doctor Strange initially. In the comics, Tony Stark outright admits to the Sorcerer Supreme that he doesn’t trust him because he “can’t trust what I don’t understand.” However, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Iron Man trusted Doctor Strange without much questioning his abilities, a key difference from the comics.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Strange and Iron Man meet in Avengers: Infinity War for the first time under precarious and potentially world-ending circumstances. After Bruce Banner is sent back to Earth by Heimdall and crash-lands into the Sanctum Santorum, he tells Strange to find Iron Man and inform him of the threat of Thanos. While Iron Man and Doctor Strange bicker and call each other names, Tony doesn’t really question his abilities. He also doesn’t question Strange when he tells him he protects his reality. Later, on Titan, Iron Man puts his trust in Doctor Strange when he tells him he’s viewed millions of possible futures and they only have one chance to beat Thanos. Ultimately, Strange is correct, and Iron Man’s trust isn’t misplaced. In the comics, however, it’s much more complicated.

In a brand new preview of The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 by Alex Paknadel, Ryan Bodenheim, Rachelle Rosenberg, Darren Shan, and Kat Gregorowicz by Marvel Comics, the comic flashes back to the formation of Marvel’s Illuminati. The secret group of heroes first meeting in Wakanda is shown where Iron Man and Doctor Strange have a fairly serious conversation about trust. Strange asks why Tony has reservations about him, and Iron Man doesn’t sugarcoat his response: it’s all about trust.

Iron Man straight up tells Doctor Strange he can’t trust what he doesn’t understand while noting it’s not personal. When Iron Man says he doesn’t know what his magic is capable of, Strange wonders how he can trust a Norse God in Thor. Iron Man responds by telling him Thor is “an open book” while Strange represents a world without rules. Iron Man says Black Panther’s faith in Strange is what keeps him from questioning his appointment to the Illuminati out loud.

Doctor Strange and Iron Man have butted heads many times in the comics – and they also got off to a rocky start in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the issue shows Iron Man can’t put his blind trust in Doctor Strange since he can’t control and doesn’t know what might come next from the magical hero. Tony Stark doesn’t blink when putting his trust in Doctor Strange in the MCU. Obviously, it was a much more dire situation. But, in the comics, even when heroes form a secret group where trust is vital, Iron Man immediately questions Doctor Strange’s trustworthiness. The Death of Doctor Strange: Avengers #1 by Marvel Comics is in stores next week.
