Marvel Just Clapped Back At Captain Marvel’s Most Ridiculous Criticism

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel’s What If…?

In Marvel’s What If…?, Marvel Studios claps back at people who say Captain Marvel doesn’t smile. The ongoing MCU Disney+ series continues to imagine what The Infinity Saga would’ve looked like if certain aspects of it panned out differently. After several weeks of creative alternative scenarios, it’s safe to assume that What If…? episode 7 is the most bizarre thus far.

Titled “What If… Thor Were an Only Child?,” the outing visualized the God of Thunder (Chris Hemsworth) coming to Earth to recklessly party. Aside from the Asgardians, he also brought in other extraterrestrial beings with appearances from Nebula, Skurge, Grandmaster, Loki, and even Howard the Duck, among others. All this while Odin was in Odinsleep and Frigga (Josette Eales) was on holiday. SHIELD, led by acting director Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), summoned Captain Marvel (Alexandra Daniels) to help stop Thor and his legion of party-goers from wreaking more havoc. This didn’t sit well with the Asgardian Prince, leading to several fights with Carol Danvers.

At one point, Thor, who’s insufferable in this alternate reality, casually told Captain Marvel to “Loosen up. Have Fun. Smile a little,” which, understandably pissed off Carol. But before she could fully knock him out just so he would stop partying, Frigga came in to chastise her son. This brief moment in What If…? episode 7 has actually a deeper meaning; it references the same criticisms that Brie Larson and Carol Danvers received in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s Captain Marvel. Like Thor, naysayers online, somehow, had a problem with Carol not looking personable in the marketing and the film in general. It’s an absurd thing to have an issue with considering that superheroes don’t smile in their one-sheets and movies.

At the end of the outing, despite the God of Thunder’s inexcusable and misogynistic behavior towards Carol, she still helped him preserve the lie that he’s in Midgard for a cultural exchange study. This proved that it’s not personal for her; she just wanted to keep Earth safe. On his part, it seemed like the God of Thunder was ashamed of how he treated her and was thankful for her assistance. He might have even been impressed with her ability to be gracious despite all that he did to her. Somehow, this highlights that the supposed problem with Captain Marvel being too uptight doesn’t have any merit. Just because she’s no-nonsense and efficient that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with her. At the end of the day, she’s good-natured and as effective as any other hero in the MCU. Carol doesn’t deserve all the bashing and ill-will that she gets, whether that’s in the latest episode of What If…? or in the primary MCU.

Following their initial conflict, expect Party Thor and Captain Marvel to eventually team up in the animated series. The end of episode 7 directly leads to the introduction of the Guardians of the Multiverse who will fight Vision Ultron, and both heroes are part of that. Back in the Sacred Timeline, their roads have diverged following Avengers: Endgame, but it’s safe to say that they will cross paths again down the road.
