Marvel Makes It Official ShangChi Has No Friends

Warning: contains spoilers for Shang-Chi vs the Marvel Universe #6!

Marvel’s Shang-Chi may have been well-liked in the Marvel Universe before, but a recent betrayal may have changed how all of his friends – and family – think of the hero moving forward. The Master of Kung-Fu is usually an affable associate of the Avengers, and as friendly as Spider-Man. But in Shang-Chi vs the Marvel Universe #6, a terrible action by one of Shang-Chi’s closest compatriots may have cost him any goodwill he had left among the Avengers and his own family.

In the Shang-Chi vs the Marvel Universe series, Shang-Chi takes over his father’s organization, the Five Weapons Society, and seeks to install reforms and ultimately reshape the Society as a force for good. But the Society, run in part by his family, is quite traditional, and doesn’t take too kindly to Shang-Chi making peace with his enemies instead of obliterating them, as is (was) the custom of the previous Supreme Commander. As such, Shang-Chi has fought many heroes who doubt his intentions, including Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine, and the entirety of the Fantastic Four. Now he faces his toughest opponent yet: Thor, the God of Thunder.

The fight is hopelessly one-sided; Thor has tangled with Asgardian monsters and even Thanos, so a simple human like Shang-Chi shouldn’t pose much of a threat. Then Shang-Chi grabs a sacred sword given to him by his brother Takeshi, summons lightning and astoundingly melts Thor’s hammer Mjolnir into a pile of molten metal around the God’s hand. But something isn’t right: Shang-Chi realizes the sword he was given has no inherent power. It’s then revealed that Takeshi is manipulating reality with the Cosmic Cube, an item that Shang-Chi had previously returned to Captain America but was apparently stolen again…by his own brother.

A furious Takeshi demands Shang-Chi choose between the Avengers or his family. Shang-Chi chooses the truth: Takeshi stole the Cosmic Cube without orders, and is thus turned over to the Avengers. Unfortunately, this action means Shang-Chi loses favor with both groups; his family no longer trusts him for turning over one of their own to the “enemy”, and the Avengers no longer trust him because they believe Shang-Chi gave them Takeshi to cover for his own actions. In attempting to find common ground between the Avengers and his family, Shang-Chi is caught in a horrific lose-lose scenario.

Unfortunately there’s no much Shang-Chi can do to rectify the situation. The Avengers no longer trust him (except Spider-Man), and his family now only listens to him because of his rank. Shang-Chi has faced villains before, but no monster can hurt him the way that he has hurt himself.
