Marvel May Be Interested in Rocket & Groot Disney Plus TV Show

Disney+ could receive a Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff TV show with Rocket Raccoon and Groot as the leads. Marvel Studios is expanding their reach to the small screen and using Disney’s upcoming streaming service as their direct outlet. Several shows featuring the same stars from MCU movies are in the works, and a new rumor suggests one could be on the way for the great Guardians duo.

Even though there’s been 20 MCU movies in the last 10 years, these blockbusters can only dedicate so much screen time to certain characters. This is why Marvel’s using Disney+ to shine a spotlight on characters that otherwise aren’t as heavily featured and tell stories that may not be possible in a movie’s standard run time. So far, only a Tom Hiddleston-led Loki series has been confirmed by Disney. The god of mischief is far from the only star preparing for this treatment, as Elizabeth Olsen is also rumored to be getting a Scarlet Witch show and a team-up series could reunite Anthony Mackie’s Falcon and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes.

There’s almost no limit to what Marvel Studios can do with these limited series and that includes focusing on two completely CGI characters perhaps. That Hashtag Show has shared a rumor in regards to another series they’ve heard is being considered by Marvel and Disney. According to the rumor, a Rocket and Groot series is one of the ideas Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has been pitched. Before fans get their hopes of this will come to pass, THS stresses this is firmly in the rumor category and should be taken with a grain of salt until further notice. Screen Rant has reached out to Disney for comment.

If this does turn out to be true, it is easy to see why Disney and Marvel would be interested in such a series. Rocket and Groot became instant fan favorites from the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie thanks to their fun dynamic. But, that relationship has grown to Rocket becoming the father figure for the new Groot that was born at the end of the first film, so much so that Groot called Rocket dad in Avengers: Infinity War according to James Gunn. Not only are they great together, but they have a relationship that predates their first movie appearance. Theoretically, this series could explore their time before getting to Xandar, maybe even showing how they met and dealing with each of their origins a bit more.

That all said, this is still merely a rumor for the time being. If Marvel and Disney have heard a pitch about this, then there’s still no guarantee they actually move forward with the idea. It is hard to deny the family-friendly appeal of such a show, though, so it will be interesting to see how this story unfolds. And if the project does progress, it could be the perfect time to bring Gunn back into the Marvel family. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s status unclear, this could be a great way to keep the franchise’s characters around.
