Marvel Reveals Beta Ray Bills Favorite Movie and Its Perfect

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Beta Ray Bill #1

In Marvel Comics’ new Beta Ray Bill series, it looks as though the mighty Korbinite warrior and his sentient A.I ship have a favorite movie from Earth, and it’s absolutely perfect given the circumstances of Bill’s current situation. In the first issue of the new series, Beta Ray Bill is struggling without his hammer Stormbreaker, a mighty weapon that was gifted to him by Odin who found Bill to be as worthy of the power of Thor as the God of Thunder himself. However, a recent duel with the Son of Odin has left Bill hammerless and trapped in Thor’s shadow. As such, it looks as though Bill is feeling a lot like the Lost Boy Rufio from the classic 90’s film Hook.

In Beta Ray Bill #1 from Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer, Bill is doing the best he can without his hammer, leading the armies of Asgard as their new Master of War (a title given to him by King Thor as reparation for breaking Stormbreaker in Thor #3). Despite not being at full strength, Bill met the monstrous and Knullifed Fin Fang Foom in battle, although Thor himself soon arrived to defeat the dragon, robbing Bill of the glory. This insult to the injury of Thor’s betrayal coupled with Bill’s inability to revert back to his humanoid form motivates Bill to forge his own path apart from Thor and Asgard, hoping to find a new replacement weapon in future issues of the series.

However, an incredible Easter egg is featured in several panels of this first issue, and it’s all thanks to Bill’s sentient battleship known as Skuttlebutt. Skuttlebutt’s A.I is connected to Bill’s cybernetics, and it can manifest itself into any nearby technology he uses. As such, monitors within Bill’s quarters on Asgard and on the ship itself are playing the same movie in the background, and it’s none other than 1991’s underrated film Hook. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Hook starred Robin Williams as a grown-up Peter Pan who returns to Neverland to remember his forgotten childhood. However, the scenes and lines of dialogue depicted are specifically those of Rufio, the leader of the Lost Boys in Pan’s absence (played by Dante Basco).

It’s more than likely that Bill feels a kinship with Rufio, who likewise had to deal with being second and stuck in the shadow of another hero (Peter Pan). While Rufio had enjoyed time in Neverland as the Lost Boys’ sole leader, Pan’s return initially made him feel threatened, though Peter Pan eventually earned Rufio’s respect and loyalty once he remembered the boy and hero he once was.

In any case, it’s a fun Easter egg that makes Bill’s story that much more relatable, while also being an amazing reference to a beloved 90’s classic, one that even alien Korbinites can appreciate. Here’s hoping Beta Ray Bill can find a way to reconcile his current struggle for identity so that he can eventually make his way back to Asgard as a new hero alongside his brother Thor just like Rufio and Peter Pan.
