The Eternals post-credits scene suggests Marvel intends to explore Thanos’ backstory from Avengers: Infinity War in far greater detail, perhaps in Eternals 2. There’s a sense in which Thanos is the protagonist of Avengers: Infinity War, rather than its antagonist; the story structure is centered upon the Mad Titan and his insane quest to rebalance the universe, rather than on the Avengers’ attempt to stop him. One of the most intriguing scenes in the movie saw Thanos arrive on Vormir, the planet that secretly concealed the Soul Stone, and converse with the Red Skull – who had been transformed into the guardian of the Soul Stone, the one responsible for revealing its secrets. “Thanos, son of A’lars,” the Red Skull addressed him, name-dropping Thanos’ father A’lars from the comics themselves.
There’d been intense speculation Eternals would build on this, taking advantage of a storyline featuring countless flashbacks to introduce the MCU’s version of A’lars. After all, in the comics Thanos is an Eternal born with the Deviant gene who was raised on an Eternal colony on the planet Titan. In the end, though, Marvel took a very different direction with the Eternals; the MCU’s version aren’t truly organic beings at all, but rather are synthetic life-forms created by the Celestials to protect inhabited worlds from the threat of the Deviants. Although Eternals had apparently been scattered across the galaxy protecting various planets, the film only focused in on the group who lived on Earth for some 7,000 years.
Still, Eternals’ post-credits scene promises to develop the plot all the same. It doesn’t introduce A’lars; rather, it introduces Starfox, Thanos’ brother in the comics. He’s transported on to the Domo by Pip the Troll, who excitedly announces his arrival; “Behold, the royal prince of Titan, brother of Thanos, defeater of Black Robert… defeater of Black Roger… the great adventurer Starfox.” It looks as though Thanos’ family life really is going to be explored following that Soul World tease after all, it just might not happen until Eternals 2.
According to Eternals screenwriters Ryan and Kaz Firpo, Eternals 2 will be an “intergalactic rescue mission” in which the Eternals on the Domo team up with Starfox and Pip the Troll to rescue Sersi and their fellow Eternals from Arishem, who had taken them away from Earth in order to decide whether or not to judge humanity. That should provide plenty of opportunity to get to know Starfox, who’s played by Harry Styles, and in turn it will inevitably shine a light on Thanos’ backstory. Even in the post-credits scene, the Eternals reacted with shock when they learned Thanos has a brother, and they’re sure to ask about it. What’s more, the Firpos further suggested Starfox could be to blame for Thanos’ villainy. “I think that Starfox is a lot responsible for why Thanos is the way he is,” Kaz Firpo observed. “All jokes aside, to have this perfect brother who can make anyone fall in love with him? It does something to you. So I hope we get to see a little bit more of that in Number 2.”
Avengers: Infinity War’s Soul World scene hinted at Thanos’ family history and his father A’lars, and it seems Marvel intend to build upon it. Hopefully that means Eternals 2 will feature flashbacks that weren’t appropriate in the first film, finally revealing the true history of Thanos’ homeworld Titan – and potentially even exploring Thanos’ indirect relationship with the Celestials themselves, given he must have been an Eternal along with his brother, even in the MCU.
