Marvel Theory Eternals Secret MCU History Created Black Knight

The Eternals’ secret history could have led to the creation of the Black Knight. Marvel has finally released the first trailer for Eternals, a movie that will introduce a whole new team of powerful superhumans into the MCU. The first trailer was focused on introducing the high-level concept for the film; the idea the Eternals are a group of ancient aliens who have served as shepherds and guides for humanity for millennia but are forced out of the shadows by an unknown, impending catastrophe.

But the trailer avoided revealing much about one specific character; Kit Harington’s Black Knight, who was only briefly seen. In the comics, Dane Whitman is a scientist who discovered he was heir to an ancient legacy. He had inherited the legendary Ebony Blade, a weapon that dates back to the days of King Arthur and Camelot. The comics have recently retconned this weapon as more powerful than anybody previously thought; it is essentially the antithesis to Mjolnir as it grows in power the more unworthy its wielder is. When the Black Knight dwells on all his inner darkness – his rage, his fear, his anger, his insecurity, his wounded pride – he grows in power, becoming what the Avengers call a WMD.

But why does Eternals feature Dane Whitman, the man who will ultimately become the Black Knight? The trailer may have hinted at a secret connection between the Eternals and the origin of the Black Knight – because the Eternals may have been involved in the legends of Camelot in the MCU.

The Eternals Trailer Hinted At A Camelot Connection

Marvel Theory Eternals Secret MCU History Created Black Knight

The Eternals trailer revealed these ancient aliens have lived on Earth for approximately 10,000 years, shaping human civilization since before the founding of Babylon. One shot showed the super-speedster Makkari in a room packed with mementos from societies across the world, from the ancient Egyptians to the Roman Empire. But one of the most curious details, though, is what appears to be the Holy Grail – which, amusingly, is seen discarded next to a Big Mac. In legends, the Holy Grail was the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper, sometimes called the Sangreal. It features prominently in Arthurian legends, with the Knights of the Round Table going on a quest to find it. Given how prominently the Holy Grail features in Arthurian legends, this subtle Easter egg should be taken as a hint the Eternals were involved in Camelot in the MCU.

There may be another hint at an Arthurian connection, though; the sword wielded by the warrior Thena, a shimmering golden weapon briefly seen in the trailers that is presumably created through her manipulation of cosmic energy. Several Arthurian legends suggest Excalibur was a unique sword that, when drawn, shone as bright as the sun; in the MCU, those myths may simply be pointing to a sword created by Thena, hinting she is the one who gave Arthur his famous weapon – that is to say, that she is the Lady of the Lake. Set photos from Eternals have shown Thena in a flowing white dress, standing scooping water in a lake; more scenes from the same location showed a medieval funeral pyre burning, perhaps referencing the death of Arthur and Excalibur being returned to the Lady of the Lake.

It’s interesting to note that the comics themselves appear to be hinting at a connection between the Eternals and Camelot as well, with Black Knight: The Curse of the Ebony Blade – a series that is retconning Black Knight ahead of his MCU debut, even revealing the Black Knight is a descendant of King Arthur – suggesting the city was “borne on Celestial engines.” In the comics, the Celestials were the beings who created the Eternals. Marvel is attempting to establish a close synergy between the movies and the comics right now, so that may well be an important indicator.

The Eternals Could Have Created The Black Knight

All this raises the possibility that, in the MCU, the Eternals were the ones who created the Black Knight. In the comics, the first Black Knight was Sir Percy of Scandia, a man who was recruited by the wizard Merlin in order to defend Camelot. He was given the Ebony Blade, a magical weapon that made him almost invincible in battle. This Black Knight adopted a classic double identity, playing the part of a vain nobleman while in reality serving as Camelot’s foremost champion and defender. Tragically, the Black Knight was actually the one who had doomed Camelot, for his decision to claim the Ebony Blade set the kingdom down a path of violence and war.

It’s possible the MCU’s version of the Black Knight was granted a cosmic weapon by the Eternal Thena; although the Eternals claim never to have interfered in human affairs, that’s clearly only a half-truth, given they were shown revealing their spaceship to one group of humans in ancient Mesopotamia and a number of them appear to have assembled in defense of Babylon. Thena could have been heavily involved in Camelot, creating the Ebony Blade and binding it to the bloodline of Sir Percy of Scandia. Whatever threat is about to force the Eternals out of the shadows, it could also require the use of the Ebony Blade. There would be a suitably mythical idea to this, fitting well with the old legend that Arthur himself would return to save England in its time of trial; if the MCU makes Dane Whitman an ancestor of Arthur himself, then he would embody that prophecy when he draws the Ebony Blade in the Earth’s defense.

For now, this remains only a theory, although it seems a fairly persuasive one; the possible presence of the Holy Grail in the Eternals trailer, accompanied by those intriguing set photos, strongly suggests there is a prior connection between the Eternals and Camelot. Given that is the case, it is reasonable to assume there is a direct link between the Eternals and the MCU’s Ebony Blade, given that otherwise, the Marvel movie would probably be introducing a few too many new concepts for one film. Hopefully, the next trailer will focus a little more on the Black Knight, confirming this connection and explaining just why the Black Knight is an important part of Eternals’ plot.
