Warning: contains cover art for X Lives of Wolverine #1-4!

In the upcoming X Lives of Wolverine, it appears Logan will score a grisly victory over one of his most tenacious foes, and may even take their place in a cross-time adventure that will launch a new era of X-Men comics following the ongoing Inferno event. Inferno marks the end of Jonathan Hickman’s tenure as Marvel’s Head of X, which has seen him revamp the entire line with the introduction of an island nation that’s home to heroes and villains alike. Wolverine has made it his mission to protect Krakoa as part of X-Force, but hasn’t taken the central role in mutantkind’s fight for survival that some fans might have expected. In January 2022, that will change.

X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine will run concurrently, with each five-issue series focusing on a different aspect of Wolverine’s time-travel mission to change history and save a major mutant figure. While X Deaths of Wolverine seems like it may be set in the future – and sees Wolverine sporting a Techno-Organic redesign which suggests he may interact with the advanced AI race known as the Technarchy – X Lives of Wolverine is set in the past, exploring some of Logan’s unseen missions before the X-Men.

Covers for X Lives of Wolverine #1-2 released by Marvel.com show that these past missions will involve Omega Red. First appearing in 1992’s X-Men #4, Omega Red is a Russian villain implanted with Carbonadium tentacles, prone to feeding on the life energy of others to fend off the poisonous effects of this unusual metal. As part of Team X, Wolverine stole the device that would allow Omega Red to better manage his implants, leading to a long-term feud that often connects Logan back to the darker days of his past. The cover to X Lives of Wolverine #2 also seems to suggest the comic will revisit Wolverine’s feral days after escaping Weapon X. Enjoy the covers to X Lives of Wolverine #1-2 by Adam Kubert below.

Omega Red has put Logan through some of the most brutal battles of his life, and it appears that in X Lives of Wolverine #3-4, Wolverine will pay that back in kind. The cover to the third issue (also shared by Marvel.com, and coming from Adam Kubert) shows Wolverine with bloody claws, standing with one foot on a coil of what appears to be Omega Red’s tentacles. In the fourth issue, Wolverine has become Omega Red, extending the same spine-like tentacles from his wrists.

A brutal killer, Omega Red is seldom portrayed sympathetically (and has recently been a thorn in Logan’s side as he deals with the machinations of Dracula), so the suggestion that Wolverine will cut off his appendages suggests a truly grisly showdown with the classic villain. The fourth cover may of course be metaphorical, with Logan somehow taking Omega Red’s place, but the tentacles were implanted into the villain once, so it’s not impossible that Wolverine intends to slice them out and take them for his own.

X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine will be written by Benjamin Percy, with interior art by Joshua Cassara and Federico Vicentini respectively. X Lives of Wolverine #1 is coming January 5, kicking off the two intertwined narratives, and pitting Wolverine against Omega Red in a battle which – if the cover art is to be believed – may be their most brutal and blood-soaked so far.
