Marvel’s Avengers’ SpiderMan DLC Doesnt Have Story Missions

Crystal Dynamics has revealed how Spider-Man’s upcoming story DLC will play out in Marvel’s Avengers, confirming the character won’t have his own story missions. The iconic Webhead is set to swing into Square Enix’s team-based superhero action-adventure title next week as a PlayStation-exclusive character, and will be the fourth new Marvel’s Avengers hero after Kate Bishop, Hawkeye, and Black Panther.

Marvel’s Avengers has had a rocky road since it launched in 2020, drawing criticism from fans for its live-service elements. The game has expanded since release, with the addition of new characters helping to introduce more stories and draw in new audiences. When the new heroes arrived in Marvel’s Avengers, they each came with a full-fledged story campaign that detailed their role in the Avengers’ ongoing battle against A.I.M. Black Panther, added with the War For Wakanda game expansion, introduced roughly 25 hours of gameplay and featured a story by Spider-Man: Miles Morales scribe Evan Narcisse. Spider-Man’s upcoming DLC content, on the other hand, will be a bit more low-key.

As revealed by IGN, Crystal Dynamics has revealed how Spider-Man’s storyline will be handled in Marvel’s Avengers. In contrast to past heroes like Black Panther, the Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man: With Great Power plotline will be told through audio logs and illustrated cutscenes that players unlock by completing challenges in the game’s Avengers Initiative multiplayer mode. Additionally, Spider-Man will be unlocked as a playable character from the beginning, rather than requiring players to go through part of a story campaign like Black Panther or Hawkeye. Marvel’s Avengers gameplay director Philippe Therien explained that the team chose this approach because they needed to devote extra energy toward “the Klaw raid that’s coming up at the same time” as the With Great Power content, and clarified that this is what Crystal Dynamics calls a Hero Event – whereas larger story campaigns like War For Wakanda were called Operations.

Spider-Man’s story in Marvel’s Avengers depicts the famed crimefighter roughly a year into his career as a superhero, and will see him join forces with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to uncover a plot by A.I.M to upgrade its deadly Synthoid army. This version of Spider-Man won’t be connected to Insomniac’s critically-acclaimed Marvel’s Spider-Man series, though the developer did praise Crystal Dynamics for its take on the web-slinger when Spidey’s in-game costume was first shown off earlier this month. A more recent comic-style trailer for Marvel’s Avengers’ Spider-Man expansion fleshed out some of Spidey’s offscreen adventures with the Avengers, and voice actor Sean Chiplock opened up about how Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man in the MCU inspired his own version of Marvel’s most famous hero.

Spider-Man’s arrival in Marvel’s Avengers was teased even before the game was released to mixed reviews last August, and his status as a PlayStation-exclusive character has proven to be divisive. This console-exclusive status may be part of the reason Spidey won’t have a full-blown story campaign in Marvel’s Avengers, instead focusing on smaller bits of content that are unlocked through gameplay. PlayStation players will get their chance to take down A.I.M as Spider-Man when the Marvel’s Avengers Spider-Man: With Great Power update launches on November 30.
