Marvel’s Avengers: The 9 Best Tips To Play As Spider-Man
Now that Spider-Man has joined the Avengers in the fight against AIM, here are some tips for gamers who start playing him for the first time.

Finally, after over a year of fans waiting for him, Spider-Man has joined the expanding roster for Marvel’s Avengers. The catch is that the famous web-slinger is only available to those who play Marvel’s Avengers on either PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5, similar to how the Insomniac games were exclusive.
The brand new DLC character reintroduces Peter Parker as a young man in his early 20s trying to fight AIM. It would be easy to expect this version of Spider-Man to play similar to his fellow Avengers but that is not the case; new players might need some tips to understand the character.
This Is Not Insomniac’s Spider-Man
If a player has previously played Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac, it is best to just throw all muscle memory of that game out of the window. Crystal Dynamics’ version of Spider-Man does not play anything like that game, nor is it intended to be similar.
There are some familiar moves but everything from the combat to the dodging to the traversal is different. Even webbing enemies with Spider-Man’s web-shooters is unlike the Insomniac version. It’s also better to not constantly compare the two different styles of gameplay since Marvel’s Avengers is is a completely different type of game.
Visit The HARM Room
As is the case with all of the heroes featured in Marvel’s Avengers, Spider-Man features a slightly complex combat system with abilities unique from all the other Marvel heroes. The best way to get familiar with Spider-Man in his base form and help rid muscle memory of Marvel’s Spider-Man gameplay is with the HARM Room on the Helicarrier.
The virtual reality tutorial will teach the player the basics of using Spider-Man, how his combat works, what his Heroic abilities do, and show just how unique Spider-Man is in comparison to previously released heroes.
Follow His Heroic Mission Chain
Sadly, there are no story-based missions for the Web-Slinger just yet. However, he does feature his own Heroic Mission chain. These mostly involve quick cutscenes and accomplishing tasks while on missions in the Avengers Initiative mode. This will introduce this version of Spider-Man into the mythos, showing that he is a young man trying to learn how to work with a team.
Liz Allan, one of many love interests of Peter’s from the comics, is now an NPC at the Ant-Hill and the seeds that might blossom into a potential story for Peter Parker down the line are planted. Also, players can earn cosmetics such as a nameplate and an outfit for Spider-Man by accomplishing the mission chain.
Use The Environment
Spider-Man’s ability to traverse the walls is not just because he can do that in the comics. Upgrades in Spider-Man’s skill tree will grant him the ability to perform powerful attacks off the walls while he is crawling or wall-running.
If in need of health, Spider-Man can web-zip over to a health canister quickly. This allows Spider-Man to escape from an enemy or fight that is too dangerous even for him. Spider-Man is also able to web swing in any area, either inside or outside and this can allow him to get high and attack enemies from above.
Less Aggression, More Support
Despite being known to swing right into the heart of a battle to fight his vast array of iconic Marvel villains, Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers is less of a brawler. Of course, he can still beat down robots and mercenaries using plenty of nimble flourishes and combo attacks. However, Spider-Man excels at supporting his team, making him the first support character to be introduced besides Ms. Marvel.
His Web-Bombs can incapacitate multiple enemies at once by wrapping them in webbing, allowing for him to revive teammates or give them a chance to breathe. Spider-Man’s drone ability will distract and attack enemies. The web-swinging alone will allow Spider-Man to maneuver to a downed teammate with ease.
Focus On The Aerial Enemies
Except for maybe Iron Man, most of the Avengers are better on the ground and shooting down aerial enemies with their ranged attacks. Spider-Man on the other hand is basically designed to be an anti-aerial character, able to maneuver and fight in the air better than anyone else thanks to both his web-swinging, web-zipping, and web-pulling.
Since aerial enemies tend to be some of the most annoying in Marvel’s Avengers, this is yet another case of Spider-Man being a support class. While characters such as Captain America and Ms. Marvel brawl on the ground, Spider-Man can handle drones, jetpack enemies, and turrets for them.
Spider-Sense Is Essential
Unlike other characters, Spider-Man can stun and/or break an enemy’s defense simply by dodging. Using the Spider-Sense, if the player times a dodge perfectly, it will automatically put an enemy into a stun, even those with shields and armor.
As a result, Spider-Man can turn his dodge attacks into his deadliest weapon, especially when both light and heavy dodge attacks are upgraded. In some of the many boss fights in Marvel’s Avengers such as Taskmaster or The Maestro, Spider-Man might end up becoming one of the more essential teammates.
Take Advantage Of The Intrinsic Meter
For other characters, the only way to perform takedowns is by filling an enemy’s stun meter to the max by dealing damage. Spider-Man doesn’t need that: his intrinsic meter is a secondary option which when filled, allows him to perform a takedown on nearly any enemy.
In certain scenarios, this can allow him to perform two takedowns in a row. Other upgrades to his Intrinsic skill trees can allow him to instantly web up an enemy for other attacks. The takedown makes for rather dynamic shots of Spider-Man than even some of the best Spider-Man artists would be proud of.
Have Patience And Level Spidey Up
This is a big one that has also been the case for other heroes in Marvel’s Avengers: how an Avengers plays at the start is nothing compared to when he is leveled up. Without all of the upgrades, Spider-Man is still a fun character to fight the likes of AIM and Klaw’s forces with but it’s not the true experience.
The more upgrades given to Spider-Man, the more his gameplay evolves to create a drastically different character. From his web abilities to simple passive upgrades to new light and heavy attacks, there is a lot to experiment with when it comes to Spider-Man’s gameplay.
