Marvel’s Midnight Suns Is Drastically Different From XCOM

Firaxis Games’ upcoming turn-based role-playing game, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, is reportedly quite distinct from the developer’s XCOM series. The recently-revealed game will allow players to customize their own characters while also teaming up with some of Marvel’s greatest heroes. A Marvel game from the XCOM developer was heavily rumored before the title’s official announcement at Gamescom 2021.

While no gameplay of Marvel’s Midnight Suns has been shown, a good deal of information was provided upon the game’s announcement. The title will be based on a classic Marvel Comics storyline, Rise of the Midnight Sons, although Firaxis Games will take many liberties with the supernatural squad. Role-play mechanics will allow players to create and customize their own original hero called The Hunter, who is actually the child of the game’s antagonist Lilith. Many iconic Marvel Comics characters such as Captain America, Iron Man, Ghost Rider and Wolverine will appear in the game. Role-play mechanics will allow players to create unique relationships with these characters, though players cannot romance these superheroes.

A report from PC Gamer reveals that, other than a turn-based combat system, Marvel’s Midnight Suns has very little in common with XCOM. While XCOM casts the player as an intangible commander who leads various soldiers through levels, in Midnight Suns players control The Hunter. There is also no permadeath in the upcoming game, which means players cannot permanently lose their superheroes when they slip up on the battlefield. Midnight Suns also has a focused single-player campaign, unlike XCOM’s war simulation structure. Gameplay in the Marvel game also strives to make the player feel like a powerful superhero, not an outgunned soldier like in XCOM, so mechanics have been adjusted to reflect that feeling.

While the XCOM games can be unforgiving to new players, Marvel’s Midnight Suns could end up being a great way for inexperienced gamers to get familiar with the genre’s distinct gameplay. The XCOM titles put a focus on tactical movement, as the player’s forces are often outgunned and outmanned. Soldiers are permanently killed when they fall in combat, giving lasting consequences to failure. A huge variety of aliens also serves to ensure that players never know what to expect during gameplay. Midnight Suns will instead strive to make players feel powerful, which is sure to be more appealing to certain fans.

While many fans may believe that Midnight Suns is just a comic book reskin of XCOM, Firaxis Games has maintained that the upcoming title will be its own distinct entity. Players will lead some of Earth’s mightiest heroes against hordes of demons, with a customized player character leading the charge. For players who have been turned off by XCOM’s unforgiving difficulty, Marvel’s Midnight Suns may be the perfect way to break into the turn-based RPG genre.
