Marvels Newest Hulk is the Most Overpowered Yet

Warning: contains spoilers for Immortal Hulk #46

Marvel’s Immortal Hulk might be the strongest there is, but which Hulk is strongest is a contentious subject among fans. While the classic Savage Hulk is one of Marvel’s heaviest hitters, his power is often surpassed by the cold fury of the Green Scar or the raw brutality of the Devil Hulk. Even those two absolute powerhouses may have just been outmatched by the newest Hulk though, a restored Joe Fixit.

Hulk’s latest victory has come after a string of tough defeats from the jade brute. Most recently, in Immortal Hulk from Al Ewing and Joe Bennet, Hulk was absolutely demolished by the evil Fantastic Four, the U-Foes. With sadistic glee, the U-Foes dismantled the already weakened Hulk. Their battle culminated in the U-Foes roasting Hulk, sending him and Joe Fixit to the Below Place. To keep Hulk from coming back, the U-Foes blasted Hulk with anti-gamma cosmic radiation. Unfortunately for them, it had the opposite of the intended effect. In the Below Place, Joe cackles with cosmic radiation, enough to bring him and the child-like Hulk back to life, and more powerful than ever.

Now, in Immortal Hulk #46 the strongest member of the U-Foes, Ironclad, launches an assault on Hulk. Arrogant as ever though, Joe easily evades Ironclad’s attacks, and then starts bending the metal of his head as though it were putty, reducing the imposing villain to a babbling mess. Furious, the U-Foes retaliate with Vapor, who turns herself into sulfuric acid, which only makes Joe laugh. He inhales the villain then blows it out at the U-Foes’ leader, Vector, blinding him. Genuinely scared of the new Hulk, Vector uses his powers to blow Joe far away. He ends up in a bar, scaring everyone around him when Thor appears. Hulk’s next opponent is the Avengers.

What makes Joe’s newfound strength so satisfying is how well it’s been built up throughout Immortal Hulk. Joe has mostly spent the series as basically a normal human, meaning his return to full Hulk status has been some time coming. Additionally, Hulk has been suffering an incredible series of losses recently. While Joe’s new form and the beating that would entail were implied in the previous issue, here readers are finally treated to just how strong Joe’s new Hulk form really is.

Still, despite the triumph of Joe’s return, it’s hard not to feel at least a little bad for his foes. The U-Foes hate the Hulk, and they are undeniably cruel, but that doesn’t make Hulk’s horrific attack on them justified. Given that he was forced to protect himself and the child-like Hulk, it appeared like Joe was turning a new leaf, however, his maiming of the U-Foes shows that he’s just as amoral as ever. With Joe as the new Hulk, the Avengers certainly have their work cut out for them.
