Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Fans Want Ridiculous Web Catapult From 2007 Game

2007’s Spider-Man 3 game featured a web launch, Slingshot feature that fans hope Insomniac Games will revive in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Activision published the Spider-Man 3 movie tie-in from developers Treyarch and Vicarious Visions to largely mixed reviews, though the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions fared far better than their counterparts on PS2 and Wii.

Interestingly, the title was supposed to receive a sequel in the form of a Spider-Man 4 tie-in, which never released because the film itself failed to see the light of day. Several other web-slinging adventures followed, of course, all iterating on classic Spider-Man gameplay mechanics in their own special way. Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac arguably boasted the most satisfying experience, as web-swinging, combat, and rudimentary stealth options combined to make players feel as though they’d truly stepped into the role of Peter Parker. But there’s one mechanic that didn’t enter the mix – Spider-Man 3’s Slingshot.

Those looking forward to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 are in agreement with Reddit user slick-nickp, who thinks the sequel should come packed with the web launch feature from Activision’s Spider-Man 3. The Redditor shared a clip of the move in action, which sees Spider-Man grapple onto two side-by-side chimneys atop a roof, then pull back and sling himself up and out into the air. As one could imagine, the result is almost comical. He soars across the sky, flying over buildings like Superman but unable to control where the air takes him. Fortunately, he crash lands in a lake.

If the swinging mechanics in Insomniac’s follow-up even remotely resemble those included in Spider-Man PS4 and Miles Morales, then Slingshot isn’t technically necessary. After all, there are far more exciting ways to navigate the open world without touching the ground. But perhaps Insomniac is the developer that could perfect the Slingshot, especially with today’s technology?

Sony announced Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 last month during PlayStation Showcase, a digital event dedicated to future PlayStation 5 projects. In addition to its next Spidey-centric adventure, the crew from Insomniac share a quick tease at year another Marvel game it has in development, one that places Wolverine front and center. While Marvel’s Wolverine likely won’t resurface for quite some time, social media and online forums are already flooded with theories about what exactly Insomniac may have in store.
