Marvels SpiderMan 2 Trailer Had Fans Expecting Infamous

A lot of the viewers tuning into Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase livestream initially thought that the trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was actually for a new Infamous game. Several exciting new games were shown off during this week’s PS5-centric festivities, but Insomniac arguably stole the show with the reveal of not one but two interconnected Marvel titles.

Indeed, fans were blown away by the trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which featured Peter Parker and Miles Morales working together to take down criminals amid the streets of New York City while a mysterious villain, presumed to be Kraven the Hunter, monologues off screen. This lasts until Venom emerges from a darkened alley, confirming that the iconic symbiote will finally make his full debut after being teased in both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. There has been plenty of buzz in the days since Insomniac unveiled its latest comic-based sandbox adventure, with players speculating that Venom could be made playable alongside Peter and Miles and wondering about what other classic Spider-Man villains will appear in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. However, when some viewers first saw Miles’s lighting zapping across the street lights at the beginning of the trailer, they were expecting a completely different superhero altogether.

According to TheGamer, plenty of viewers watching Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase livestream mistook Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for a new Infamous game, at least until they saw Spidey. Resetera user Dust conducted an informal survey on the subject a day or two ago, and sure enough an overwhelming 72.6% of the roughly 936 voters who took it mistook Miles’s Venom Blast at the very beginning for Infamous protagonist Cole MacGrath’s signature lighting.

Sucker Punch released the first Infamous game back in 2009, telling the story of a bike messenger named Cole MacGrath as he develops the ability to shoot electricity from his fingertips and tasking players with deciding if he would use this newfound power for good or evil. Two follow-ups were released: 2011’s Infamous 2 continued Cole’s story as he traveled to New Orleans to battle a world-ending being known as the Beast, and 2014’s Infamous: Second Son shifted the focus to the multi-powered Delsin Rowe as he evaded an anti-metahuman military unit in a fictionalized Seattle. The series has remained dormant since, though rumors of a new Infamous sequel started to spread after PlayStation reportedly filed a domain name for “infamousthegame.com” a few days before the PlayStation Showcase livestream on Thursday.

This, combined with the fact that Insomniac had already made a big announcement in the form of Marvel’s Wolverine, likely led viewers to believe that they were witnessing the reveal of a brand-new Infamous title when they saw that electricity zap along a traffic light during Thursday’s PlayStation Showcase livestream. It ultimately wasn’t the case though, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was instead confirmed for 2023. However, a new Infamous title could still happen in the not-too-distant future, especially given how successful PlayStation’s last few exclusive superhero titles have proven to be.
