Massive Harry Potter Diagon Alley LEGO Set Launches With 16 Minifigures
LEGO releases the newest installment in its Harry Potter collection, a 40-inch recreation of Diagon Alley that includes over 5500 pieces.

Quarantined Potterheads may have just found their escape as LEGO’s newest Harry Potter set recreates the magical downtown neighborhood Diagon Alley. Since producing its first Harry Potter set in 2001 to correspond with The Sorcerer’s Stone movie’s theatrical release, LEGO has continued to craft plastic versions of highly detailed Potterverse buildings, characters, and scenes from the beloved franchise. Although the main books and movie series have concluded, there are still plenty of fans of Harry Potter.
Each year, Sept. 1 marks the celebration of “Back to Hogwarts Day” – the day Hogwarts students in the fictional universe return to school. The official Harry Potter website, WizardingWorld.com, hosted a series of virtual events leading up to a final “Back to Hogwarts” livestream yesterday. The event included trivia, special appearances, and an option for fans to submit “school pictures” of themselves. To make 2020’s Back to Hogwarts Day even more special, LEGO released the new, massive Diagon Alley set.
The product went live on on the LEGO site Sept. 1, along with the Harry Potter Series 2 (71028) collection of characters. The 75978 Diagon Alley set costs $399.99 – one of LEGO’s more expensive Harry Potter installments, but perhaps a small price to pay for a visit to Ollivander’s Wand Shop. The box contains over 5500 individual pieces (5544, to be exact), including four buildings, 14 minifigures, and various magical odds and ends. Other shops featured in the package along with Ollivander’s include Scribbulus Writing Implements, Quality Quidditch Supplies, the Daily Prophet, Florean Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlor, Flourish & Blotts bookseller, and Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes, which moves.
In addition to the buildings, 14 characters stroll the alley: Harry, Ron, and Hermione; Ginny, Molly, Fred, and George Weasley; Ollivander, Gilderoy Lockhart, Draco and Lucius Malfoy, Hagrid, Florean Fortescue, and a Daily Prophet photographer. The minifigures of Lockhart, Fortescue, Lucius Malfoy, and the photographer are exclusive to this set. The whole scene spans 40 inches and should take around eight hours to complete, depending on how focused the builders are. In an interview with SYFY WIRE, lead designer Marcos Bessa revealed they used scenes from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince along with descriptions from Rowling’s novels to depict the famous Wizarding World location.
While the LEGO Diagon Alley set is on the pricier end of the spectrum, it seems perfect for fans who want to spend the time building such a big recreation from the Wizarding World. And with Diagon Alley the first stop for any young wizard preparing to attend their first year at Hogwarts, or for returning students to get ready for a new school year, now was the right time to debut the LEGO set. Though it may not be for all Harry Potter fans, those interested in the LEGO Diagon Alley set can check it out now.
