Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 2, episode 1, “Cleaved In Twain.”

The premiere episode of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 2 copied one of the most dramatic moments of Thor: Ragnarok, revealing that Prince Adam did not need the Sword of Power to call upon the Power of Grayskull. This seemed to be a tribute to a similar moment, when the MCU Thor realized he did not need his hammer Mjolnir to summon the power that was his birthright. Both heroes ultimately proved themselves to be powerful, even without their signature weapon.

Picking up where the finale of Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Part 1 ended, with Prince Adam mortally wounded and Skeletor having taken on a new form, “Cleaved In Twain” found the heroes of Eternia fighting a running battle against Skeletor’s army of the risen dead. The heroes took shelter in the Royal Palace of Eternos, but even the castle’s defenses were not enough to repel a Skeletor enhanced by the Power of Grayskull. Skeletor was inspired to gloat, taunting Prince Adam by saying that without the Sword of Power, “you’re no longer He-Man… you’re barely a man!”

To Skeletor’s surprise, Prince Adam began to laugh. When Adam stopped, he claimed that Skeletor didn’t understand him or the Sword of Power at all. “The sword is just a conduit,” Adam explained. “But the spark? That was always me.” Adam then raised his hand up, like he did when he held his sword to transform into He-Man before, and said he had always wondered what would happen if he didn’t have He-Man’s Sword of Power but still said the words, “By the Power of Grayskull.” The episode ended as Prince Adam did just that, calling on the Power before an awe-struck Skeletor.

This dramatic moment bore a strong resemblance to the climax of Thor: Ragnarok, where Thor Odinson confronted his older sister Hela as she tried to take over Asgard. Early on in the movie, Hela destroyed Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, which he had long believed was the source of his powers as the god of thunder. Later, as Hela tormented Thor, who was pinned down and seemingly helpless, Hela taunted her brother by asking him to remind her what he was the god of. In that moment, Thor had a vision of his father, Odin, who told him that Thor’s weapon Mjolnir was meant to control his power and focus it, not serve as the source of his strength. Inspired, Thor summoned a lightning bolt, which knocked Hela away, allowing Thor to join the battle, wielding the power of a storm in his bare hands.

While Prince Adam’s empowerment in Masters of the Universe: Revelation seems derivative of Thor: Ragnarok, the series introduced a novel twist that distinguishes it from the MCU film in one respect. Unlike Thor, Prince Adam cannot call upon his powers without consequence and the Sword of Power was required to keep him from going berserk. While this revelation may prove to be another controversy for the Netflix He-Man series to weather, Skeletor was dismayed to learn the Sword of Power was the one thing holding Prince Adam back from unleashing the full power of He-Man upon him and delivering a much-deserved savage beating to the Lord of Destruction.
