Like many heroes before him, Falcon relies heavily on his little robotic ally Redwing. But fans might not know all that much about the small drone.

There are many superheroes who rely on their gadgets. Batman needs his utility belt, Spiderman needs his web-shooters, Professor X needs Cerebro and Falcon needs Redwing. It becomes quickly established at the beginning of the series The Falcon and The Winter Solider that Sam Wilson relies on this trusty piece of equipment to get through some of his toughest missions.
Sam has his military training, his wit, and bravery, but Redwing is arguably the most essential part of his package as a hero. Sam Wilson was handed the sacred Captain America shield by Steve Rogers but Redwing is really Sam Wilson’s shield, which is why it’s important for Falcon fans to know about it.
10 MCU’s Redwing Was Made By Stark Industries And Wakandan Technology
Falcon went through a number of variations of Redwing. The first drone for Redwing was made by Stark Industries, ran by of course the late great Tony Stark. This was used in the fight against Ultron. The new model and suit was created by the Wakandan Design Group using their advanced technology. After Falcon’s new Redwing was destroyed in a fight with Karli and the Flag Smashers, Bucky asked Dora Milaje member Ayo to create a new Redwing for Sam, even though he didn’t have kind words for Redwing earlier in the series.
9 Redwing’s Lasers Can Cut Through Steel
The first episode of FATWS quickly saw Redwing in action. Falcon needed to save a military general that the villain Batroc held hostage on a plane. Flacon used thermal vision to determine the general was still on the plane while being savagely beaten by his captors. Falcon was able to employ Redwing to uses its laser beams to cut through the steel of the plane and jump in to save the general. This laser that can cut through steel could also help the Falcon if he needed to escape from a steel barrier.
8 Redwing Has High Powered Missiles And Machine Guns
Redwing’s appearance in the first episode also showcased that Redwing has an arsenal of weapons, such as machine guns and missiles. As Falcon is attempting to save the military general who’s taken hostage by the criminal organization LAF, fighter jets approach to take him out.
Redwing is able to fight off the enemy combats by firing back with rockets and a whole lot of ammunition. These types of defense systems Redwing possesses can help Redwing defend himself in the most dangerous situations.
7 Redwing Has Grappling Technology
One crucial and non-lethal defense mechanism that Redwing has is a projectile grappling cable. This first appeared in Captain America: Civil War during a clash with Spider-Man, Falcon was able to use Redwing to grab and neutralize Peter Parker after Peter shot Sam with webbing. Fans saw Redwing’s grappling in the last episode when Sam was rescuing government officials from helicopters the Flag Smashers hijacked. The grappling feature used by Redwing may be an even more heroic way to disarm enemies because you can effectively capture and stop them without killing them.
6 Redwing Can Lift Heavy Vehicles
Redwing’s ability to use its jet power to lift heavy objects came to use of “One World, One People.” A van carrying The Flag Smashers’ hostages was set to fall off of a scaffold on a construction site, put there by Karli. John Walker, in a rare moment of redemption and dignity, attempted to save the van before being attacked by the Flag Smashers.
Just as the van was about to fall, Falcon used both Redwings to lift the van and save the hostages. While Falcon technically used both of his new Redwing devices, this is a solid resource and a new skill that was employed in a creative way that saved lives.
5 Redwing Has Multiple Visual and Scanning Abilities
Redwing has multiple abilities that are showcased in MCU. It’s important in high-stress situations to have the ability to assess the danger using Redwing’s scanning technology. Sam Wilson was able to use Redwing’s scanner to detect the flaw in Ultron which assisted the Avengers in taking Ultron down. The thermal feature of Redwing’s scanner had allowed Sam to see what Batroc was doing to the general he captured. This is a central feature to providing much-needed intel and is good for Sam when he’s fighting “the big three.”
4 Redwing Has Facial Recognition Applications
Facial recognition is arguably the coolest part of Redwing’s Artificial Intelligence. During the climactic last episode of FATWS, Falcon flew after the Flag Smashers’ helicopter that was holding the hostages. In one of the most clever uses of Redwing, Falcon used facial recognition to assess the skills of each of the hostages on board. Redwing was able to determine that one of the hostages can fly a plane using the facial recognition software. While facial recognition can creep people out, Redwing’s use of it can come in handy when needed the most.
3 The Original Redwing Was A Bird Not A Drone
In the comics, Redwing was a trained pet sparrow that the Falcon used for missions. Originally the sparrow had a telekinetic link to Falcon thanks to manipulation by the Red Skull. Falcon used this to communicate with Redwing through telepathy. This was of course later changed into a drone to adapt with the times, which many fans and writers thought was a better idea rather than sticking true to the original intent of the comics. It should be noted that Black Widow did compliment Redwing the drone and jokingly offered to pet it.
2 Redwing’s DNA Was Used On Other Falcons
The sparrow in the comics developed an even closer connection with someone other than Sam Wilson. JoaquĆn Torres was a Mexican immigrant who was captured by the hate group the Sons Of Serpents and sent to be experimented on by mad scientist Karl Malus. Malus infused Redwing’s DNA into Joaquin. Captain America was able to save Joaquin once he located him at Malus’ New York base. A positive occurrence that came from the experimentation was that it gave Joaquin superpowers, such as the ability to fly, and also gave him the same telepathy with Redwing that Sam had with the sparrow.
1 Bucky Barnes Does Not Trust Redwing
This was the most interesting reveal about Redwing in the series. When Bucky and Sam are arguing about giving up Steve’s shield, Sam mentions that he has to fight this new group known as the Flag Smashers. Sam mentions that he tracked down the Flag Smashers location with Redwing. Bucky quickly and snidely responds that he doesn’t trust Redwing. It’s not clear if Bucky really doesn’t trust Redwing or if this is a part of an underlying rivalry that Bucky and Falcon had at the beginning of the series.
As it’s previously mentioned, Bucky does encourage Wakandans to make Sam a new Redwing, despite the fact that Sam used Redwing to taunt Bucky when he crashed in a forest after jumping out of a plane.
