HBO’s True Blood began airing in 2008 at the height of the Twilight craze. Unlike author Stephanie Meyer’s teen-focused, sanitized take on the vampire, True Blood’s fanged monsters — also based on a series of books by Southern Gothic author, Charlaine Harris — were sexy, dangerous and shrouded in mystery. But, after a slew of nonsensical romantic pairings, orgasmic fairy births and a waitress’s mounting fears that her infant son was a serial killer, True Blood’s increasingly perplexing storylines left many loyal fans scratching their heads. Much like The CW’s baffling hit Riverdale.

Headed by Archie superfan — and the Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics — Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the popular teen drama unironically includes superpowers, aliens and exorcisms, having taken a truly bizarre supernatural turn in its current season. And, after 14 years, True Blood is slated to return to the small screen with Aguirre-Sacasa at the helm. Given the ways in which Riverdale continues to devolve into a bizarre soap opera, fans eager to return to the supernatural southern town of Bon Temp have serious concerns about the reboot’s quality.

A common criticism of the original True Blood was its mistreatment of queer and non-white characters. The show’s Tara Mae Thornton (played by Rutina Wesley) was frequently traumatized throughout. Raised by an abusive, alcoholic mother — whose redemption arch was both unearned and sloppily handled — Tara’s wit, sass and humor in the face of misfortune made her a fan favorite. Despite this, even in earlier seasons, the show seemed hellbent on putting her through the wringer.

After being turned into a vampire by another witty fan favorite, Pam Swynford De Beaufort — and forming a rushed romantic bond with her — Tara is swiftly killed off at the start of Season 7, with her most interesting storylines far behind her. Despite Riverdale rarely exploring death with any sincerity, this treatment is similar to that of the show’s Toni Topaz, whose once fascinating and beloved character was sidelined in favor of a controlling romance with Cheryl Blossom that left her with little to do. While Toni’s actress, Vanessa Morgan, took to Twitter to voice her concerns and Aguirre-Sacasa vowed to “do better,” fans are less than hopeful that this problematic treatment will not continue in the new True Blood.

Aguirre-Sacasa’s treatment of Kevin Keller is also a point of contention. First appearing in Veronica #202, the character was friendly, fleshed out and defied harmful queer stereotypes. In the comic, prior to coming out to his new friends, Veronica develops a fresh crush on Kevin before realizing her error and welcoming him into their group with open arms. Aguirre-Sacasa’s Kevin has long been criticized for the opposite, appearing as the archetypal “gay best friend,” rather than a fully realized character. And, by Riverdale’s later seasons, he is virtually non-existent.

While fan-favorite True Blood character Lafayette is known for his flare, style and unabashed flamboyance, fans worry that under Aguirre-Sacasa he will not escape the sidelines. Given that the character was quickly killed off in True Blood’s source material, these fears are not unfounded. As previously stated, Aguirre-Sacasa’s love of absurdist storylines is also not a baseless concern, given True Blood’s established absurdity in later seasons.

Little is known about when production of the True Blood reboot will really begin. Though Aguirre-Sacasa’s involvement has been confirmed, little else has. Given the divisive reputation of Riverdale, and its many in-universe counterparts, fans can only hope that the previous incarnation’s problems will not be exacerbated.
