Matrix 4 Trailer All But Confirms New Agent Smith Theory

Jonathan Groff playing a revived Agent Smith is one of the most convincing theories ahead of The Matrix Resurrections – and a new trailer might just prove it correct. Very mysterious and very meta, The Matrix Resurrections is a confusing blend of new and familiar, where a visibly older (barely) Neo recreates scenes and storylines from 1999’s original The Matrix. Though many cast members are returning (Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Lambert Wilson, etc.), some big names are conspicuous by their absence. One of these is Agent Smith himself, Hugo Weaving. The actor previously confirmed an approach was made by Lana Wachowski, but his availability didn’t line up.

Since we know Lana Wachowski wanted Agent Smith in The Matrix Resurrections, many believe another actor is now playing the iconic villain – and Jonathan Groff sits atop the list of prime suspects. Groff’s past roles reveal qualities perfect for a Smith variant, and The Matrix Resurrections’ trailer added to the theory by proving Groff was playing a major antagonist, and then alluding toward Agent Smith’s Morpheus interrogation from the original trilogy.

While past trailers hinted Jonathan Groff would be playing Smith in The Matrix Resurrections, new footage goes even further. The “Deja Vú” trailer compares historic scenes to new The Matrix Resurrections moments, and images of Groff’s character intersect several times with Hugo Weaving’s Agent Smith. The biggest clue comes around the 21-second mark, where archive footage of Smith smashing Neo into a wall bleeds into a fresh scene where Groff is the one pummeling Keanu Reeves through brickwork. Not only is the comparison itself highly suspect, but the scene also confirms Groff’s character possesses strength on-par with the Agents.

The Matrix Resurrections’ Deja Vú trailer drops other Smith hints too. There’s the previously-seen image of Groff’s mouth closing over with skin – which Smith did to Neo in 1999 – and the shot of Groff looking menacing as rain pours down his face is very reminiscent of the water-soaked final battle between Smith and Neo in The Matrix Revolutions. The Agent Groff fan theory was already convincing, but Warner Bros.’ marketing division now seems to have dropped any pretense the two characters aren’t one and the same – just as the first trailer did with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II playing Morpheus.

At least Agent Smith’s new appearance is easier to explain. As a program, Smith could already shift form, and as his power grew throughout the original Matrix trilogy, he even learned to hack bodies in the real world. Coming back after Neo destroyed him, Smith likely rebuilt himself from scratch, hence the younger, Groff-ier exterior. Indeed, a line in The Matrix Resurrections’ Deja Vú trailer might explain how Smith can return with a brand new face – “Why use old code to mirror something new.” Smith could be the old code, and Groff is the new mirror.

Jonathan Groff’s character won’t necessarily be the exact same Agent Smith that Neo defeated back in the day. Similar to how Yahya Abdul-Mateen II might not be playing the Morpheus audiences know and love (but is still, essentially, Morpheus), Groff’s version of Smith could be a recreation rather than the sinister genuine article. Hiring a different actor to play a character as iconic as The Matrix’s Agent Smith, Lana Wachowski is taking a huge risk. By shaking up The Matrix Resurrections’ cast with a mixture of the familiar and the new, however, her sequel-reboot-remake-revival can avoid the all too common pitfall of nostalgia.
