A player recently caused a massive 1km traffic jam in The Matrix Awakens, one that serves as a solemn reminder of what Cyberpunk 2077 could have been. After some initial leaks and speculation, Epic unveiled The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience during last week’s The Game Awards 2021 livestream. The free-to-download tech demo features the talents of The Matrix Resurrections stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Mos, and provides gamers with an impressive look at the potential of Unreal Engine 5.

Players who download The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience are greeted with visually stunning renditions of Reeves and Moss as they reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity from The Matrix films, and discuss the future of technology with recreations of classic scenes from the original Matrix movie rendered in Unreal Engine 5. From there, The Matrix Awakens takes players on a thrilling car chase against enemy Agents, then lets the tech demo’s unnamed resistance fighter roam a massive open-world city that rivals those of fully fleshed-out games. Eagle-eyed fans have already spotted Easter eggs referencing rumors that Neo and Trinity are soon coming to Fortnite, while others are just happy to cause chaos in the sandbox that Epic crafted to show off its promising new game engine.

Reddit user elalextamez recently shared a clip of their massive 1km traffic jam, caused by the player in The Matrix Awakens (via The Gamer). The multi-lane pile-up was created by stopping a car in the middle of a busy overpass, with the backlash stretching on for roughly a full kilometer of The Matrix Awakens’ 16 square-kilometer virtual city. Some commenters have compared the metropolis to the Night City of Cyberpunk 2077 (which coincidentally also features the voice and likeness of Keanu Reeves as the rebellious rocker Johnny Silverhand). Redditor mattchew1993 pointed out that The Matrix Awakens feels like the game that Cyberpunk 2077 should have been, commenting on the Reddit post: “This tech demo really showing what Cyberpunk could have been.”

Developer CD Projekt Red made many grand promises during the long development cycle for Cyberpunk 2077, but a good portion of them were ultimately unfulfilled. Thanks to marketing from the developer, fans were expecting a sprawling and hyper-realistic world not unlike the one seen in the Matrix demo, but there was no shortage of enticing features that CDPR hyped for Cyberpunk 2077 that ultimately didn’t make the final cut when the game shipped last December. Even features that did make it into Cyberpunk 2077, including multiple backstories for V, are relatively bare-bones when compared to the robust story paths that CDPR promised pre-launch. The backlash from this was only compounded by the plethora of game-crashing bugs and glitches that plagued Cyberpunk 2077 at release, with CD Projekt Red still working to improve the game experience a year on from its launch.

Cyberpunk 2077 may not be the groundbreaking post-modern sandbox that players were promised, nor is it the highly-detailed and visually astounding tech showcase similar to the Matrix demo, but fans seem to be warming up to the CDPR game if a recent wave of positive Cyberpunk Steam reviews is any indication. Perhaps in the future, a developer can take the technology shown off in The Matrix Awakens and make the game that CDPR hyped Cyberpunk 2077 as in the years leading up to its now-infamous launch.
