MCU 5 Times Captain America Had A Brilliant Plan (& 5 When He Just Got Lucky)

Captain America’s USO song calls him the “star-spangled man with a plan” which is a fairly accurate description. As Steve Rogers finds himself in the middle of many high-stakes adventures, he often has to think on his feet and come up with a plan to save the day.

In some cases, Steve proves to be quite good at strategies and often outsmarts the villains. But there are also times when things work out for Steve, not through clever thinking, but rather out of pure luck. That mix of intelligence and good fortune has helped Captain America become such a successful hero.

10 Brilliant Plan: Capturing The Flag

Though many people dismissed Steve Rogers before he was given the super-soldier serum, he was still a pretty impressive young man. When training for the military program, the other soldiers are much stronger, but Steve proves himself smarter than them all.

When given the task of retrieving a flag from a pole on the base, all of the stronger soldiers attempt and fail to climb up. Steve decides to assess the situation and simply knocks the pole over and calmly takes the flag off the ground.

9 Got Lucky: Jumping On The Grenade

Along with proving himself smarter than the other soldiers, Steve also shows that he has a lot more bravery than them as well. In a rather cruel test, Col. Phillips throws a fake grenade in the middle of the soldiers.

The others run to save themselves while Steve doesn’t hesitate to jump on it to protect everyone. It is the moment that proves he is the man for the job, but he also had no idea it was a test. Had it been a real grenade, Steve’s story would have been a short and tragic one.

8 Brilliant Plan: Invading Red Skull’s Lair

MCU 5 Times Captain America Had A Brilliant Plan (& 5 When He Just Got Lucky)

Though Red Skull is Captain America’s most formidable villain, he was gullible enough to fall for a very obvious trick. Once Steve and the Howling Commandos locate Red Skull’s lair, Steve goes in as a one-man army to attack.

He is easily captured, but this turns out to be an obvious distraction allowing the other forces to storm the base and leading to Red Skull’s ultimate defeat. It is nice to see a hero use the “captured on purpose” scheme that villains use so often.

7 Got Lucky: Rescued By Maria Hill

MCU 5 Times Captain America Had A Brilliant Plan (& 5 When He Just Got Lucky)

Though Cap might be the most heroic character in the MCU, it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t occasionally need some help. In fact, without so many close allies by his side, he could have been killed many different times.

After the corrupt SHIELD agents led by Rumlow arrest Steve and the others, they are being driven to be executed. Though Steve seems quite defeated in this moment, one of their captives ends up being Maria Hill in disguise who is kind enough to free them all.

6 Brilliant Plan: Leading The Avengers

MCU 5 Times Captain America Had A Brilliant Plan (& 5 When He Just Got Lucky)

The Avengers don’t make for the most functional team when they first come together. There is a lot of clashing of egos and distrust, but when the fate of the world is on the line, they are ready to come together as a team. And there is only one man who can lead them.

Though Tony Stark may be a genius, Steve shows why he calls the shots on the battlefield. He expertly gives directions to all of the heroes to fight Loki’s army in the most effective way. It is a moment that really establishes him as a leader.

5 Got Lucky: Wanda Saving Him From Rumlow

MCU 5 Times Captain America Had A Brilliant Plan (& 5 When He Just Got Lucky)

For much of his time in the Captain America trilogy, Steve’s main weakness was his friendship with Bucky. He is willing to risk everything to help his friend, but it can also be a distraction for Steve.

When Rumlow mentions Bucky’s name as he and Steve fight, it causes Steve to drop his guard. Rumlow takes the opportunity to activate his explosive vest that Steve failed to notice. The only reason he is not blown up is that Wanda Maximoff was there to shield him from the explosion.

4 Brilliant Plan: Using Hydra’s Own Algorithm Against Them

MCU 5 Times Captain America Had A Brilliant Plan (& 5 When He Just Got Lucky)

Though Steve Rogers usually played by the rules, he finds himself as an outlaw in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After discovering Hydra is operating within SHIELD and is preparing to use an algorithm to murder millions of potential threats, he seeks to stop them.

Steve is usually the kind of hero that just fights his way to victory, and while he does have to battle quite a bit, his plan for taking Hydra down is pretty clever. After reworking the original algorithm, the Hydra ships target themselves instead of innocent people, bringing their plan down.

3 Got Lucky: Being Saved By Bucky

MCU 5 Times Captain America Had A Brilliant Plan (& 5 When He Just Got Lucky)

While Steve is attempting to stop Hydra, he also battles his former friend Bucky Barnes and tries to get him to remember who he was. Eventually, Steve refuses to fight anymore leading to him being badly beaten by Bucky before falling into the river below.

This could have been the end of Steve as he would surely have drowned, but his faith in his best friend was well placed. Though it is usually Steve that has to save Bucky, this time Bucky pulls Steve from the water, finally remembering him.

2 Brilliant Plan: Posing As A Hydra Agent

MCU 5 Times Captain America Had A Brilliant Plan (& 5 When He Just Got Lucky)

Steve and the others are forced to go on an elaborate time heist to recover the Infinity Stones from the MCU’s past and undo Thanos’s snap. It is a dangerous and complicated mission, but Steve makes it look easy when he takes the Mind Stone.

After returning to the events of The Avengers, Steve intercepts Rumlow and the other crooked SHIELD agents. Though it looks like he’s going to fight them all and take the stone, he instead says “Hail Hydra” making them believe he is on their side and they simply hand it over.

1 Got Lucky: Learning About The Quantum Realm

Steve Rogers has always had a determination that few heroes possess. But Avengers: Endgame saw him facing real defeat for the first time and not knowing what to do. Though he still tries to make the best of the situation, he seems to have accepted that they lost and there is nothing that can be done.

It isn’t until Scott Lang returns from the Quantum Realm that the idea of the time heist begins to form. Had that not happened, Steve seems like he was willing to just carry on with no idea of how to make things right.
