The MCU’s Avengers featured six core members at the start. Over time, each of them has had truly happy and sad moments that stand out.

For the original six Avengers, they spent a solid duration of time as a team across the years and the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. During that time period that they all spent together, so much of their lives was shown on screen, including all the zeniths and nadirs.

In the MCU, the Avengers were never afraid to embrace their deepest emotions. Happiness and sadness exist in tandem for the original six and while there were plenty of moments for the superheroes to smile, there were also tons that were met with tears and wavering.

12 Clint Barton – Happiest: The Birth Of Nathaniel

Despite all suggestive evidence in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Hawkeye ended up surviving the film. When it seemed like he’d give his life for a little boy, it was Quicksilver who sacrificed his life for the sharpshooter.

This led to Clint happily returning home to hug and love his family. Shortly thereafter, the Bartons’ newest member, Nathaniel, was born. With Clint in pseudo-retirement at that point, he was living his best life.

11 Clint Barton – Saddest: Losing His Family

That picture-perfect family scene was squashed at the start of Avengers: Endgame when every single member of Clint’s family was lost in the aftermath of Thanos’ snap. In a harrowing manner, Clint jogged across his farm, uncertain and scared as they disappeared.

This led to a deep depression for Clint. Globetrotting for vigilante status after this, Clint was certainly at his lowest when he lost his family. There is only heartbreak when Natasha retrieves him from his latest spree.

10 Natasha Romanoff – Happiest: Surviving New York

Speaking of characters who were doing just fine after they avoided the potential cataclysm of an Avengers battle, Natasha seemed to be at her happiest when she had won. Not just the Battle of New York, though, as she also kind of won her spot in a team.

In Endgame, she’s marred by loss and after Ultron, she’s uncertain where Bruce skipped off to. But after the first Avengers, Natasha had a solid foundation, a leadership position, and the well-being of her best friend back. She was in a good spot in that final scene of the movie.

9 Natasha Romanoff – Saddest: Vormir

Obviously, the saddest scene for Natasha comes on Vormir. After Red Skull told her and Clint that they had to lose what they loved most to get the Soul Stone, she sacrificed herself for the mission in true “whatever it takes” fashion.

For Natasha, it was a noble, heroic move and what she really wanted to do. But it’s hard not to feel the tears flowing when she falls to her death. Thankfully, Black Widow showed that she got to reunite with her family before her death.

8 Bruce Banner – Happiest: Smart Hulk

While everyone lost after Endgame, Bruce Banner might be one character who gained something. Yes, he was also reeling from their failure and the “death” of some of his friends but he never seemed more at peace than he did in the Endgame diner scene.

Fully embracing the two halves of himself, Bruce was in a much more harmonious state of being. He was happy to be able to wear a cardigan and go out in public without fearing for what the Hulk would do to communities.

7 Bruce Banner – Saddest: Woken Up On Sakaar

In Thor: Ragnarok, the Hulk gets many of the funniest scenes. However, there is never a sense of true joy and happiness from either him or Bruce. Instead, it’s more like repression and settling.

This much is evidenced by the reaction from Bruce when he steps back in the quinjet and is confronted with a video message from Natasha. It’s heartwrenching to watch him struggle away from his own humanity in a desperate attempt not to feel sadness or pain.

6 Thor – Happiest: Officially An Avenger

As of late, there has not been a whole lot of happy moments for the god of thunder. Ever since The Dark World, it’s been a steady stream of loss. Jane, Odin, Frigga, Heimdall. Even Loki once or twice.

Yet, it’s hard to see Thor as being any happier than when he had all of those people in his life and he had shed the youthful arrogance that had defined him early in his MCU run. The opening scene for Thor in his second movie is definitely when he’s at his happiest and when he’s officially an Avenger (albeit one who operates independently).

5 Thor – Saddest: His Time In New Asgard

All those aforementioned bouts of loss did a number on Thor, though. When he turns up after the time skip in Endgame, he’s shown to be depressed and a man who let himself go in New Asgard.

When Bruce and Rocket arrive to convince him to rejoin the team, he’s only interested in beer and not redemption. When the name Thanos is mentioned, he crumbles into an emotional mess. It’s so sad to watch Thor in that state.

4 Steve Rogers – Happiest: Reuniting With Peggy

At the end of Endgame, most characters are in a much better position than when they started. Steve Rogers, in particular, has finally achieved the happiness he’s long yearned for.

Steve gets to return to the time he lost where he finds home and he finds Peggy. Their reunion, marked by a dance, a song, and a kiss, shows a sweet smile spread across Steve’s face. It’s genuine contentment, which is genuine happiness for Cap.

3 Steve Rogers – Saddest: Reuniting With Peggy

A different reunion with Peggy shows Steve at his lowest, though. Before Endgame and when he was still just a man out of time, Cap felt lonely and isolated. He’d later learn Bucky was still kicking, but the early strides of Winter Soldier are tough for him.

Namely, when he reunites with Peggy and learns that she has Alzheimer’s is a truly debilitating scene. It’s about as sad as it gets to watch Steve sigh, slump his shoulders, and know that he missed that shot at love. Only, Endgame showed that love comes around.

2 Tony Stark – Happiest: Reuniting With Pepper

Keeping the reunion train going, the end of Iron Man 3 probably stands as Tony’s happiest moment. He’s fully a hero with a secure circle of friendships and he also rekindles his love with Pepper by denouncing his Iron Man position.

Obviously, this proved to be temporary. But in that shimmering final moment of Iron Man 3, everything had fallen into place for Tony. Romantically, professionally, and morally, he was at his peak.

1 Tony Stark – Saddest: Losing Peter

Tony’s next appearance, though, saw him get warped by Wanda into believing he must never stop trying to prevent an existential threat to humanity. As evidenced by Thanos’ scorched earth affair in Infinity War, Tony was (temporarily) unsuccessful.

This led to the “death” of Peter Parker at the end of the film. It was a moment that weighed heavily on Tony’s conscience and left him devastated, as he felt responsible for letting his close mentee die. Watching him curl up at the end of the film is so tough to see.
