Warning: Contains spoilers for Hawkeye.

The evidence is building that Vincent d’Onofrio will be reprising his role as the Kingpin in Hawkeye – and it’s possible the rise of the MCU’s Kingpin was a direct consequence of Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War. For months, there have been rumors that Hawkeye would introduce Vincent d’Onofrio as the MCU’s Kingpin, rebooted from his role in Daredevil – likely a little more comic book accurate, and geared more towards a PG-13 audience.

It increasingly looks as though those rumors are true. In Hawkeye episode 1, Kate Bishop stumbled upon a black market auction where the Ronin suit had been put up for sale. According to the auctioneer, Ronin “almost destroyed the status and power of the head of organized crime” – a pretty accurate description of the Kingpin in the comics, suggesting Hawkeye did serious damage to the Kingpin’s criminal empire back when he operated under the Ronin identity. Hawkeye episode 3 went one step further, presenting the backstory of a character named Echo who’s traditionally associated with the Kingpin – and hinting at Echo’s mysterious uncle, in what seems like a perfect setup for the Kingpin.

But if this is indeed a redesigned Kingpin, how does he fit in with the wider narrative of the MCU? Many fans of the old Marvel Netflix TV shows were often frustrated at the fact that, although they claimed to be connected to the MCU, they never really felt as though they were. Presumably Marvel Studios’ Kingpin slots neatly into the MCU timeline – and Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War could well explain his rise to power.

Thanos’ Snap Left The World In Chaos – And Kingpin Could Have Taken Advantage

When Thanos snapped his fingers in Avengers: Infinity War, he erased half the living creatures in the universe. The Snap survivors were left to pick up the pieces of their broken lives, but few suffered as badly as Hawkeye; his entire family – his wife and children – were all snapped out of existence by Thanos. A grief-stricken Hawkeye transformed himself into Ronin, hunting down criminals he believed were unworthy to survive the snap. Meanwhile, the snap would likely have profoundly affected the life of the Kingpin as well, apparently already established as a crime boss by the time Ronin began his rampage.

So far, Marvel has avoided exploring the consequences of Thanos’ snap too directly, perhaps sensing the story would be too bleak. The Falcon & the Winter Soldier hinted at the scale of the global catastrophe; governments were destabilized, food supplies were disrupted, and all the normal rules of global trade were shattered. Nation-states collapsed, probably leading to mass migration on an unprecedented scale as the survivors sought security. Some saw positives in the world Thanos had created, but in truth, most would have only seen grief and suffering.

It isn’t hard to see how a man like Kingpin would have flourished in such a situation. Wilson Fisk has always been known for his commanding personality, and he’d have been able to marshal his surviving agents at speed; most likely quicker than any remaining rivals, who he’d have swiftly eliminated, securing his empire. As the new status quo settled in, Kingpin would have seen tremendous opportunities in mass migration and the collapse of national boundaries. And no doubt many people sought comfort in illegal narcotics, which Kingpin’s people would have been happy to provide – at a cost.

The Hulk’s Snap Would Have Provided More Opportunities

The Hulk reversed Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Endgame, five years later. Ironically, that would have simply created still more opportunities for Wilson Fisk. As seen in The Falcon & the Winter Soldier, politicians and world leaders attempted to restore the old status quo – and Kingpin would have stood alongside them, offering money for bribes, attempting to ensure the restored world order did as little damage as possible to his criminal empire. Meanwhile, a second wave of mass migration – as people were repatriated back to the lands they had come from – would have provided Kingpin with another chance to expand his network, because some of the people being taken back to other countries would have been working for him. Kingpin’s network would have been perfectly positioned to continue expanding, meaning he’d have become more powerful than ever before.

Ronin Was The Kingpin’s Only Obstacle

The mysterious Ronin would have been the Kingpin’s only obstacle. The brutal vigilante seems to have been active in New York City for some time, and that naturally meant he wound up at war with Kingpin’s criminal empire. According to the black market auctioneer in Hawkeye episode 1, Ronin came within a hair’s breadth of bringing it down – but he was ultimately unable to do so. It’s unclear whether New York simply became too hot for Ronin, forcing him to leave the city, or whether he instead started trying to disrupt Kingpin’s global crime network – and was still working on that when he was intercepted by Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame.

This would certainly explain why Kingpin’s agents would respond to what they believed to be news of Ronin’s return in New York City. Echo wouldn’t be the only one with a personal stake in this; she had lost her father, but it’s likely many of Kingpin’s agents had lost people they knew and cared about too. The Kingpin, for his part, would be watching this from the shadows, deeply concerned. He’d likely know what Echo did not – that the Ronin costume was being sold at the auction – and thus he’d be able to deduce the suit may have changed hands. But he couldn’t possibly take the risk of Ronin’s return, or indeed of someone else taking over the Ronin identity and mission. Either scenario would be a threat to Kingpin’s power base, and he’d even be willing to go up against an Avenger like Hawkeye in order to eliminate the potential threat.

So far, the connections between Kingpin and the Blip – the five-year period between the two Infinity Stone-powered snaps – is purely theoretical. What is certain, though, is that Marvel Studios will seek to tie their version of the Kingpin into the MCU’s overarching narrative, and linking him to Avengers: Infinity War is probably the easiest way to do so. It would also mean Hawkeye and Kate Bishop are facing a Kingpin at the peak of his power, with only one ace up their sleeve; the fact Clint Barton knows a lot more about all this than Kingpin, Echo, and Kate believe.
