Damon Salvatore always says what’s on his mind in The Vampire Diaries. While it makes the other characters view him as unlikeable, nothing can stop Damon from calling it as he sees it. Damon doesn’t bother to sugarcoat the truth, and even though some of his comments are better left unsaid, they’re never incorrect.
With the exception of Elena, Damon doesn’t care what anyone thinks of him. He’s the ultimate icebreaker and addresses any lingering tension in the room, regardless of whether he’s involved in it. Because Damon has no shame, he consistently blurts out what viewers wish they could say to the characters.

Elena isn’t the most popular hero in The Vampire Diaries, as she can be a bit of a buzzkill. The characters often find themselves in life or death situations that need to be taken seriously, and during these times Elena’s attitude is understandable.
However, Elena also ruins everyone’s fun on the rare occasions that they get a chance to have it. She acts like Jeremy’s mother, despite the minuscule age gap between them, and does the same thing with others. Elena is a lot more enjoyable when she’s not hovering over her friends and doling out lectures.
9 “No Need To Make This More Dramatic Than It Needs To Be.”
During The Vampire Diaries Season 1, all the show does is make things more dramatic than they need to be. Stefan and Elena’s diary entries would be laughable in real life, as they had a way of making their own thoughts sound cryptic and mystifying.
Thankfully, Damon’s sense of humor is part of what helps the show evolve. The crow and the fog make him far too theatrical when he’s first introduced, but it only takes a few episodes for the powers to disappear. It’s hard for anyone to be cheesy with Damon there to call them out.
8 “It’s One Of His Trademarks. Like His Brooding And His Hair.”
Stefan’s known for a lot of different things, yet his broodiness manages to stand out above all of them. He and Elena are initially perceived as bland characters, which is likely why they form an immediate connection. While Elena was grieving the death of her parents, viewers come to realize that Stefan is just naturally more reserved.
Stefan’s attitude is what makes him who he is, and he offers a dry sense of humor that can’t be matched. However, when he goes overboard, Damon is always there to keep his brother humble and taunt his “hero” hair.
7 “We Kissed. Now It’s Weird.”
Getting on Elena’s nerves is Damon’s way of flirting, and the couple has some of the funniest scenes in The Vampire Diaries. After they share their first real kiss, it’s understandable why Elena feels awkward around him.
Falling for Stefan’s brother while trying to bring him home was never a part of her plan, but the moment causes an undeniable shift in Elena and Damon’s relationship. The tension lingers uncomfortably in the air, and Damon does the audience a favor by breaking the ice.
6 “I Understand. He’s The Reason You Live. His Love Lifts You Up Where You Belong. I Get It.”
Whether or not viewers believe Stefan and Elena are soulmates in The Vampire Diaries, parts of their relationship are over the top. The “love at first sight” trope makes them feel straight out of a classic romance novel, and certain scenes can be difficult to take seriously.
Damon is quite the romantic himself, but even he’s amused by Stefan and Elena’s dramatics. His hilarious quip is reflective of just how cringe-worthy all the relationships are at the beginning of the show.
5 “Have You Heard The Gossip? Caroline And An Original Hybrid Sitting In A Tree.”
Damon speaks for every Klaroline shipper after watching the 100th episode of The Vampire Diaries. Klaus leaves Mystic Falls at the end of the fourth season, and because The Originals takes place in New Orleans, it appears unlikely that he’ll return anytime soon.
Yet, he and Caroline reunite and give fans the scene they’ve been waiting for. Klaus convinces Caroline to be honest with him and her confession leads to a hook-up in the woods. Their tryst becomes a hot topic of discussion both on and off the show, and Damon is only one of many people spreading the news.
4 “I Saw That Coming From A Mile Away And My Brain’s Made Of Cotton!”
Not only is this one of Damon’s funniest quotes, but it’s also an underrated line in The Vampire Diaries. Damon talks through Bonnie’s teddy bear and uses it to mock his brother and poke fun at his relationship with Caroline.
Even before the series addresses her feelings, Caroline’s crush on Stefan is clear. Damon and Alaric are puzzled by his cluelessness, especially given how good Stefan is at picking up on others’ feelings. Mr. Cuddles sees it coming from a mile away and so does the audience.
3 “Didn’t You Find It Weird That You Made A Friend So Fast? Have You Met You?”
As beloved as Jeremy is, he’s never been good at making friends. It has nothing to do with the kind of person he is and everything to do with the energy he gives off. Jeremy usually wants to be left to his own devices and pushes Elena and Jenna away every time they try to get close.
Other than his love interests, the only people Jeremy hangs out with are those he knows through Elena. Things change once he gets dragged into the supernatural world, but Jeremy befriending someone so quickly raises a red flag.
2 “Really? That’s Weird. ‘Cause I’m A D*ck.”
When Mason introduces himself to Damon by saying he’s heard good things about him, Damon takes the words right out of viewers’ mouths. He might be beloved as a fictional character, but there are very few people in the series who will speak highly of him.
Damon is rude to everyone he comes across, making the praise questionable. It doesn’t take long for Mason to discover that he was being forthright, as Damon tries to kill him right after they agree not to indulge in an outdated rivalry.

Any How I Met Your Mother fan can find this quote relatable, as Damon uses the sitcom to exemplify how much Stefan values human nature. While he might have been exaggerating to prove a point, there’s nothing untrue about his statement.
How I Met Your Mother is an embodiment of the human experience and doesn’t shy away from the highs and lows of life. It makes viewers feel every single emotion in the book, and Stefan does want to have a love story similar to Ted Mosby’s.
