Me Before You Trailer Daenerys Targaryen Lives Boldly

Game of Thrones actress Emilia Clarke’s vast fan base are used to watching her reign over Meereen with whole armies and a trio of dragons in her arsenal. However, her latest role will show the last Targaryen in a very different light – as a romantic lead in the bitter-sweet drama, Me Before You.

The lead up to Valentines Day has many in the mood for love, which is no doubt what Warner Bros. are counting on as they have just released the first official trailer for this tear jerker movie that pairs Clarke with Hunger Games YA crush Sam Claflin. Me Before You takes the age old girl meets boy plot and serves it with a tragic twist, as you can see by checking out the trailer above.

Me Before You is adapted from Jojo Moyes’ bestselling novel focusing on a charming and positive young woman (Clarke) who finds an unlikely career caring for a wealthy young man (Claflin), who has suffered a tragic accident that left him a quadriplegic. The official synopsis for the film is as follows:

“Oftentimes you find love where you least expect it. Sometimes it takes you where you never expected to go…

Louisa “Lou” Clark (Clarke) lives in a quaint town in the English countryside. With no clear direction in her life, the quirky and creative 26-year-old goes from one job to the next in order to help her tight-knit family make ends meet. Her normally cheery outlook is put to the test, however, when she faces her newest career challenge. Taking a job at the local “castle,” she becomes caregiver and companion to Will Traynor (Claflin), a wealthy young banker who became wheelchair bound in an accident two years prior, and whose whole world changed dramatically in the blink of an eye. No longer the adventurous soul he once was, the now cynical Will has all but given up. That is until Lou determines to show him that life is worth living. Embarking together on a series of adventures, both Lou and Will get more than they bargained for, and find their lives—and hearts—changing in ways neither one could have imagined.”

The movie is directed by Thea Sharrock (The Hollow Crown) and also stars a collection of familiar British faces from the big and small screen, including Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) and Matthew Lewis (Harry Potter). Moyes has written the screenplay for the film with Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, who have plenty of experience adapting this style of material – having worked on fellow tear jerkers The Fault in Our Stars, The Spectacular Now and Paper Towns.

From the trailer we can see the happy go lucky Lou allows Clarke to showcase her range outside of the formidable bad-ass roles she is widely known for. Her performance appears to take a leaf out of the Zooey Deschanel book of manic-pixie-dream-girls with an added, down to earth approach that seems befitting to the British tone and setting. Claflin has more of a challenge on his hands to deliver an authentic character dealing with severe physical and subsequent psychological challenges -hopefully the movie will not skim over the reality of his condition as these limitations could provide the conflict needed to elevate this film above the sentimental mundane.

It does not look as if Sharrock has chosen to push any such boundaries here (baed on the trailer), but has handled the subject matter in Me Before You sensitively nonetheless. Clarke and Claflin appear to have the romantic chemistry necessary to pull the heartstrings, making this another sweet addition to this thriving sub genre of romantic films that pitch grief against euphoria for a feel good sob-fest.
