Mega Man 5 Most Powerful SubWeapons (& 5 Most Worthless)

The Mega Man series has put the players in the shoes of the Blue Bomber for years. Each game has had a colorful selection of Robot Masters that needed to be overcome before approaching the nefarious Dr. Wily.

With all of these Robot Masters have come weapons unique to their title and element. One of the better parts of the Mega Man franchise is these weapons that give the player more versatile gameplay options than just using Mega Man’s regular buster shots. However, one common consensus players of this beloved Capcom series have had is that not all of these weapons are designed equally.

10 Worthless: Top Spin Requires Recklessly Jumping Into Enemies

When fighting Top Man in Mega Man 3, the player might be misled into believing the weapon obtained from him would be similar to his attack of three homing tops sent after the player, but how wrong they are. Instead, the weapon obtained from Top Man is a spinning attack that Mega Man does at closer proximity to his hitbox.

More often than not, when any player uses this weapon, they thrust themselves right into an enemy and take a hit of damage. The boss weak to this attack is Shadow Man, one of the harder robot masters in the game to defeat. Using this weakness makes the fight that much harder, especially with its inconsistent energy drain.

9 Powerful: Metal Blade Makes A Joke Out of Most Bosses and Enemies

The Metal Blades in Mega Man 2 are often lauded by players as one of the best weapons in the franchise, for pretty good reason at that. It can shoot in all directions and most bosses and enemies are weak to it.

This weapon is so unbalanced that it even two-shots the boss it came from, Metal Man. On top of how useful Metal Blade is, is its generous energy consumption, giving the player over one hundred uses of it before it needs to be completely refilled.

8 Worthless: Charge Kick Damages Mega Man More Than His Enemies

Mega Man 5 Most Powerful SubWeapons (& 5 Most Worthless)

This is yet another contact-based weapon that forces Mega Man to go directly up to enemies to damage them. This time the player is forced to use their sliding ability to attack. The hit frames for this weapon are way too precise and to top it off, it isn’t even that useful for many scenarios.

Mega Man 5 is an entry already notoriously known for having weaker sub-weapons, and with how difficult of a boss Charge Man is, the reward just isn’t worth the effort to get it.

7 Powerful: Wheel Cutter Helps Mega Man Ascend To New Heights

Mega Man 5 Most Powerful SubWeapons (& 5 Most Worthless)

This sub-weapon is useful in unconventional ways. The speedrunning community loves this weapon for the vertical movement it grants them. Obtained from Nitro Man in Mega Man 10, the Wheel Cutter glides on the ground and can be fired three times in a row at enemies.

Against bosses, it’s surprisingly more of a viable strategy to attack them from up-close than it is to attack from a distance. The most useful part of this weapon is the vertical movement it grants, allowing players to scale walls by merely standing next to them with the Wheel Cutter active and not-yet-released from Mega Man’s arm.

6 Worthless: Wild Coil Requires Very Precise Aim

Mega Man 5 Most Powerful SubWeapons (& 5 Most Worthless)

Wild Coil in Mega Man 7 is obtained by defeating Spring Man. The way this weapon works is that it fires two deadly springs, if the player holds down the fire button before releasing the springs they’ll bounce higher and deal out more damage. The issue with this weapon comes from the precision needed to effectively use it.

The final boss of Mega Man 7 is called by many fans, one of the hardest in the series, and to make matters worse for this boss, his weakness is the Wild Coil. On top of dodging the four projectiles that the Wily Capsule fires out, players also have to aim this imprecise weapon at him.

5 Powerful: Black Hole Bomb Consumes Every Enemy On Screen

Mega Man 5 Most Powerful SubWeapons (& 5 Most Worthless)

The name of this weapon very clearly describes how overpowered it is when put into the player’s hands. Obtained from Galaxy Man in Mega Man 9, the Black Hole Bomb does as its name implies and creates a black hole that consumes anything it can pull into it for several seconds.

It’ll consume enemy projectiles and entire enemies. What makes this weapon even more useful is the fact that once it’s fired out, it can be directed upwards or downwards and then detonated at the player’s behest.

4 Worthless: Blizzard Attack’s Name Isn’t The Only Thing Lame About it

Mega Man 5 Most Powerful SubWeapons (& 5 Most Worthless)

This weapon is obtained by defeating Blizzard Man in Mega Man 6 and is by far one of the most useless weapons in the game. While it can be useful against very few fire-based enemies in the game, hitting anything with it is the real problem. The way it fires out is by sending out four projectiles.

Two projectiles move upwards and downwards across the screen while the other two shoot forward above and below Mega Man’s body. It’ll be a miracle if Mega Man hits anything with these pathetic projectiles. To make matters worse, the energy consumption of this weapon is terrible.

3 Powerful: Thunder Beam is The First Mega Man Game’s Best Weapon

Mega Man 5 Most Powerful SubWeapons (& 5 Most Worthless)

The first Mega Man game didn’t have much when it came to creativity with their weapons. Half of the weapons in that game were misses, but Thunder Beam was not one of those misses. This weapon is obtained by defeating Elec Man and it is one of the most useful weapons in the entire game.

Plenty of bosses have a weakness to it, including the infamous Yellow Devil. If that isn’t good enough, then it is also a great tool for clearing away large blocks that block Mega Man’s path, which only serves to give Super Arm even less use.

2 Worthless: Power Stone Can’t Hit Anything

Mega Man 5 Most Powerful SubWeapons (& 5 Most Worthless)

By far, one of the worst weapons in the series would have to be Power Stone from Mega Man 5. This weapon is obtained after defeating Stone Man and sends three rocks flying out of Mega Man that circle around him in one clockwise direction.

What makes this weapon terrible is the fact that it barely does anything to enemies, most of the time it misses when used. Even the boss that it’s useful against, Charge Man can become invincible to it at multiple points in that fight. Most players would sooner use the Mega Buster and forget about these useless flying rocks.

1 Powerful: Acid Barrier Melts Anything It Touches

This weapon comes from the most recent entry in the Mega Man series, Mega Man 11. Acid Barrier is obtained from defeating Acid Man. It is easily one of the best shields in the whole franchise due to the defense it offers and the fact that it allows Mega Man to continue going on the offensive while it’s active.

The power gear version of this shield offers an increased level of defense. While it slowly withers the more hits it takes, it’s still a valuable shield that players can maximize while traversing the likes of Dr. Wily’s fortress.
