Melissa McCarthy Has The Same Bad Movie Problem As Adam Sandler

Despite her prolific career, Melissa McCarthy has a problem, and her latest film Superintelligence might be making matters worse. Much like Adam Sandler, McCarthy can’t stop making bad movies. Both actors have proven to be capable actors when given more dramatic roles, yet they are both stuck making the same kinds of comedies over and over again.

Superintelligence began streaming on HBO Max on Thanksgiving day, but its reception has not been great. It is already being lumped in with similar films in McCarthy’s filmography, including poorly received comedies like Tammy, The Happytime Murders, and Life of the Party. Sandler experienced similar disappointment earlier this year when his Netflix comedy Hubie Halloween was universally panned, albeit not as much as some of his previous films, because Hubie Halloween does feel different compared to much of Sandler’s other work. Still, Sandler remains enshrined in recent memory as Howard Ratner in Uncut Gems, a role that solidified Sandler as a genuinely great performer. Likewise, McCarthy’s turn as Lee Israel in Marielle Heller’s Can You Ever Forgive Me? came just two years ago, and nabbed the 50-year-old mother widespread critical acclaim.

Adam Sandler has developed a reputation for simply making movies with his friends, paying little attention to how good or bad those movies actually are. Of course, he has arguably earned this right after finding so much success with his several late-90’s comedies. Sandler’s movies are designed to perform well at the box office (or on Netflix) and give some of his closest friends a good time. Does that otherwise excuse them from being so bad? Maybe, although plenty of other creatives, such as Seth Rogen or Martin Scorsese, have managed to make great films while also working with familiar faces. Sandler’s reputation precedes him when it comes to working with his friends and family, but McCarthy’s “bad movie” problem may exist for a very similar reason. McCarthy regularly collaborates with her husband, Ben Falcone, on her films. Falcone frequently appears via cameos in his wife’s films, and is perhaps best recognized as Air Marshall Jon in Bridesmaids.

While Falcone may prove an effective actor, his ability as a director is suspect at best. Each of his films has flopped critically, and it seems Superintelligence, which he helmed as well, will be no exception. It is perfectly understandable, admirable even, that McCarthy would want to work with her husband. Unfortunately, however, the collaboration seems to have stymied her creativity and pigeonholed McCarthy into underwhelming roles, resulting in one bad movie after another, and leaving McCarthy with little opportunity to take on other projects.

Of course, all is not lost for McCarthy. If Sandler is any indication, all it takes is a great performance every once in a while to cement your legacy as a great actor or actress. Sandler may churn out bad movies on a regular basis, but, in addition to Uncut Gems, he has also delivered incredible turns in films like Punch-Drunk Love and The Meyerowitz Stories. McCarthy has demonstrated similar potential in films like St. Vincent and even The Heat, which saw her reunite with Bridesmaids director Paul Feig. She doesn’t need to abandon slapstick comedies in order to make great films; she just has to diversify her portfolio every once in a while. Superintelligence may not be the film to turn McCarthy’s career around, but that doesn’t mean her next great movie isn’t right around the corner.
