Why Gotham Knights Doesn’t Need Joker

WB Games Montreal has repeatedly confirmed Batman will not appear in Gotham Knights, but this means Joker doesn’t need to either. Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime and Batman’s rivalry is legendary throughout comics and movies and has appeared in many iterations of the Dark Knight. Despite Joker’s popularity, Gotham’s Rogues Gallery contains many interesting characters that could become a villain as equally enjoyable as Joker.

Joker’s rivalry has changed Batman, through actions like his assault and paralyzation of Barbara Gordon (aka Batgirl) and his murder of Jason Todd (Red Hood). Additionally, Joker also kidnapped Tim Drake (Robin) on Christmas and held him hostage, and has always harbored a hatred for Dick Grayson (Nightwing). Despite the Joker’s relationships with the Batfamily, his main conflict always focused on Batman. Without the Dark Knight in Gotham, Joker’s presence is no longer required – through hallucinations like in Arkham Knight or otherwise. Gotham Knights should instead focus on different villains that can explore other adventures in Gotham.

WB Games Montreal confirmed three villains for the upcoming Gotham Knights game, including Mr. Freeze, Penguin, and Talon. Each of these characters are vastly underutilized in Batman projects but are still known throughout the community. Mr. Freeze appeared in Batman: Arkham Origins’ Cold, Cold Heart DLC, and the Penguin (who’s appeared in Arkham games as well) is a rival to Bruce Wayne and Batman due to a family feud. Details concerning Talon’s character have yet to be revealed but will likely focus on the iteration seen during the “City of Owls/Night of Owls” plot in the comics. No matter the truth behind Talon’s character, they will be an exciting addition to Gotham Knights’ universe.

Gotham Knights Should Give The Batfamily Their Own Rivals

Like Batman, each playable member of the Batfamily has unique rivals to face in Gotham’s Rogue Gallery. Batman’s death in Gotham Knights now gives his proteges independence to conquer their demons. Batgirl frequently faces her brother, James Gordon Jr., a registered psychopath responsible for the gruesome deaths of many former classmates and attempted murder of his family. Tim Drake’s Robin has been a subject of fascination for Ra’s Al Ghul, Master of the League of Assassins, who values his intellect to a disturbing degree. Nightwing has faced Deathstroke time and time again since his youth and could experience a rematch in Gotham Knights. Though Red Hood’s greatest enemy may arguably be the Joker, he has also been known to clash with Black Mask. Any of these enemies could be an appropriate replacement for the iconic Joker.

Additionally, Gotham Knights could introduce new villains like Batman: Arkham Knight did. Though the true identity of the Arkham Knight was a familiar face, the character has since evolved and become a part of Batman mythos in the current comic continuity. Introducing a new villain could place Gotham Knights at the origin of a (potentially) popular new character.

Gotham Knights is Batman Arkham’s spiritual successor, despite taking place in another universe. Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood all have the chance to be heroes without the Dark Knight’s shadow and should receive villains that enhance their characters. Joker’s rivalry with Batman is no longer prevalent given Batman’s absence, and his appearance would be a disservice to the Crown Prince of Crime.
