The Office The Best (& Worst) Storylines Ever On The Show

While The Office hasn’t been releasing new episodes for nearly seven years, it’s still really popular. It has had a long-lasting impact on pop culture, and it’s still viewed by many as one of the best comedies ever made.

While The Office definitely had some great things about it, there were also some storylines that really hurt the show. Luckily, there were some amazing storylines fans loved to balance the bad out. Here are the best and worst narrative arcs from the series.

10 Worst: Cathy trying to seduce Jim

While the series tried to show that Jim and Pam also had relationship struggles, they brought too many relationship drama storylines in the last two seasons. The worst of these was definitely Cathy trying to get with Jim.

It felt extremely forced, and it wasn’t great to introduce a new character who was solely there to be a temptress for Jim. Mostly, fans just found this storyline annoying.

9 Best: Michael and Jan’s relationship

Michael and Jan’s relationship was absolutely wild and completely toxic. These two weren’t good together, but their awful relationship made for some of the most hilarious and iconic scenes in the series.

Fans will never forget the “Dinner Party” episode. It was a perfect storyline for Michael at the time, and it also paved the way for Michael to have a better relationship in the future.

8 Worst: Andy as manager

While Andy started out on the show as a funny but ridiculous side character, making him more of a main character didn’t really work. The character wasn’t likable enough or funny enough to really carry the show.

So, when he became manager, the series really suffered. Then, Andy went on his sailing expedition and wasn’t even in the show, and he continued to become more and more of a jerk to Erin and to everyone else.

7 Best: Jim and Pam in the first few seasons

Jim and Pam’s romance was really the heart of the series for so long. While other characters like Dwight and Micahel were hilarious but ridiculous and rude, Jim and Pam were characters that fans could like and root for.

While their storylines weren’t as good in the last few seasons, they really carried the show forward for the first five seasons or so.

6 Worst: All of Erin’s relationships

While some of the relationships on the series made for great storylines, others made the show much worse. The Office never seemed to quite know what to do with Erin as a character, and they kept having her date various men.

However, none of these relationships made for good television. The most frustrating overall was her off an on-again relationship with Andy that never really made sense.

5 Best: Pam regaining her confidence

While fans wanted Jim and Pam to get together really badly, the show was actually smart to let Pam have some time to be single in between breaking off her engagement with Roy and dating Jim.

She really went through a lot of character development and gained self-love and confidence. Her coal walk moment was really great, and she didn’t just depend on Jim to find some happiness.

4 Worst: Michael leaving and the new managers

When Steve Carrell left the show, it meant that Michael had to be written off. Some fans still feel the show should have just ended there, but the ninth season was somewhat redeemable. However, the end of the seventh season and the eighth season of the series really struggled.

The worst part about this storyline was the cycling through different new managers. While they did bring in some big-name actors for a few episodes, none of their characters really lived up to Michael Scott.

3 Best: Dwight and Angela’s affair

Dwight and Angela definitely don’t have as endearing of a relationship as Jim and Pam, but their relationship was also a big part of the series. While fans didn’t always root for them as they did some awful things to one another, in the end, they were weirdly kind of right together.

They were obviously both being bad people when having an affair while Angela was with Dwight, but it was really compelling. It showed some of their hypocrisies and was also really funny at times.

2 Worst: Everything with Dwight’s potential spin-off

The Office The Best (& Worst) Storylines Ever On The Show

One of the absolute worst storylines on the show were the ones centered on Dwight’s almost spin-off. The episode “The Farm” in season seven was a backdoor pilot that never got picked up, and it’s easy to see why.

Introducing Dwight’s siblings out of the blue was just weird, and nothing about this was interesting. Dwight worked best as a character in the context of Dunder Mifflin, and these new characters weren’t something fans wanted to see.

1 Best: Michael and Holly getting engaged

While Michael and Jan’s relationship was a good storyline for the show precisely because it was so awful and hilarious, Michael and Holly ending up together was a good storyline because it was endearing.

While Michael leaving did hurt the show, the character left on a high note. It was great character growth for Michael to be willing to leave Dunder Mifflin and to finally find the family life he always wanted. He was able then to see his employees as friends and move on to a new adventure with someone who was right for him.
