Why Friends Really Ended After Season 10

Friends came to an end in 2004 after ten seasons, and as it was a very successful series and regarded as one of the best of all time, it came as a surprise to some that the series was coming to an end – and here’s why it really ended after season 10. Created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, Friends made its debut on NBC in 1994 and became quite popular very quickly thanks to its tone and how relatable its characters were.

Friends followed the many ups and downs of a group of six friends living in New York City and doing their best to navigate through adulthood and everything that came with it. Monica, Phoebe, Rachel, Joey, Chandler, and Ross, along with many of their one-liners, are now a big part of pop culture, and the series was also very important for its behind-the-scenes achievements, becoming the first TV cast to negotiate as a group so they all earned equal salaries. By the time season 10 arrived, each main cast member was earning $1 million per episode, making Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, and Courteney Cox the highest-paid TV actresses.

Taking that into account, along with the success and popularity of the series, it seems odd to some that Friends came to an end after 10 seasons (while some feel it was just about right). Crane and Kauffman once shared that they wouldn’t have gone through another season of Friends even if all cast members were up for it, as they had crafted season 10 in a way that it would bring closure to the characters’ arcs. Crane explained that it took them “awhile to get on board with the idea of season 10” and had to examine what stories were left to tell so they could have a good reason to come back.

It’s also possible that Friends was becoming unsustainable in terms of production costs, as the cast was already getting a big check that would have most likely grew bigger with more seasons. Another possible reason is the change of trends in TV, with sitcoms becoming less popular as drama series began to take over. Of course, there’s also the possibility of the cast not wanting to continue with the series, as they had already been part of it for 10 years, and it was only fair for them to have to chance to explore other roles in film and TV. In fact, Jennifer Aniston almost didn’t return for season 10 of Friends, as she wasn’t sure how much of Rachel she had left in her and wanted the series to end while people “still loved them”.

While season 10 might not be the best of all, it did a good job in bringing the arcs of the main characters to an end – except for Joey, who even got his own spinoff series. Had Friends continued after season 10, it would have definitely risked losing the interest of the audience and its quality declining, but it managed to save its reputation as one of the best series of all time by knowing when to end.
