Two Years After Launch Disney Still Hasnt Solved Its Biggest Problem

Two years after the launch of the streaming service, Disney+ still hasn’t solved its biggest problem. The platform launched on November 12, 2019, and it has since become a hallmark of Disney and Disney-owned entertainment with the company removing the vast majority of its properties from other streaming services. Disney+ played an integral role for Disney content released during the COVID-19 pandemic as the company employed simultaneous releases on the platform and in theaters to accommodate public safety.

Created to challenge the likes of Netflix, if not beat them outright, Disney+ premiered movies like Black Widow and Mulan, and has also become home to a number of acclaimed TV series including The Mandalorian and Loki among others. However, despite the success of its releases, Disney+ remains relatively slow at producing new content. Compared to similar streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, and Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ has seen large gaps between its admittedly popular series. This problem has been constant since the launch of the streaming platform, and it begs the question of whether they can actually produce solid content quickly enough to compete with the other streaming giants.

It goes to show that even after two years, Disney+ has yet to fix its largest issue, which is a lack of regular, new content available to all its subscribers. The platform has struggled with this, and based on the prospective release windows for highly anticipated shows like the MCU series Ms. Marvel and Star Wars’ Andor, it doesn’t appear as though the issue will change anytime soon. It’s also worth noting that some of Disney+’s new releases over the past year have been slightly marred by the company requiring an additional premium charge to view it from home.

Disney+ has established a history of lengthy gaps between show releases, and upcoming premiere dates suggest the problem is ongoing. Disney’s last episode of the MCU streaming series What If…? released on Oct. 6, and the MCU’s subsequent show, Hawkeye, won’t release until Nov. 24. The release of Marvel’s major Eternals movie could’ve bridged the gap somewhat, but it premiered exclusively in theaters. In addition, future projects like Ms. Marvel and Star Wars’ show, Andor, won’t hit Disney+ until some undisclosed dates in mid-2022. The platform is struggling to strike an effective balance between streaming and cinematic releases, and its strategies so far have not been effective.

Another contributing factor to this issue is that when they do release movies simultaneously on Disney+ and in theaters, they charge a hefty premium to view them from home. In addition to the monthly subscription fee, viewers were asked to pay $30 to watch movies like Black Widow and Jungle Cruise while they were still in theaters. When audiences compare this to platforms like HBO Max which charges only $15 a month and offered full access to much-anticipated releases like The Suicide Squad and Dune simultaneously on streaming and in theaters, the value of Disney+ comes into question.

None of this is to say that Disney+ is an outright bad streaming platform, but it has shown problems in its first two years that it has failed to fix. Even factoring in delays caused by COVID-19, Disney+ needs to cut down on the gaps between its releases, but it also needs to be careful not to sacrifice quality for speed. If the streaming platform truly wants to compete with the likes of Netflix and HBO Max, Disney+ will first need to address this issue which has plagued it since day one.
