While Adam Malkovich is coming back in Metroid Dread, Nintendo assures fans he won’t be calling the shots this time. The divisive Galactic Federation Army commander and implied love interest of Samus Aran made his first on-screen appearance in 2010’s equally controversial Metroid: Other M, where Samus was forced to follow his every command – even in regards to her own Power Suit.

Developer Team Ninja intended this mechanic to be a creative spin on the Metroid tradition of Samus losing all of her powers and weapons at the start of every game, but fans felt that it flew in the face of her being a bounty hunter who’s not even officially allied with the Federation to begin with, as well as one of gaming’s pioneering female heroes. Not only that, but being bound to Adam’s commands led to some truly baffling gameplay moments during Other M, such as when he finally permits Samus to use her heat-blocking Varia Suit – right after she’s been forced to run through a lava-filled chamber with fire raining from the ceiling.

None of this endeared Adam to Metroid players, but while he will be returning in the upcoming Metroid Dread, fans can rest assured that history won’t be repeating itself. “Adam is just a point for lore,” Nintendo’s Theresa Apolinario explained during yesterday’s Nintendo Treehouse at E3. “He doesn’t give any direction to Samus, it’s up to the player where they want to navigate and explore.”

Metroid Dread had actually been planned out since the days of the Nintendo DS, but it wasn’t until the last day of E3 2021 that Nintendo finally unveiled the game for the Switch. Serving as a sequel to the classic Metroid Fusion (which Other M served as a prequel to), Dread returns the series to its 2D, dungeon-exploring roots for the first time on a home console in nearly two decades as Samus faces off against a mysterious robot named E.M.M.I. Not much else is known of the plot yet, but Nintendo already has a Special Edition available for pre-order, featuring an art book and concept trading cards from past Metroid games.

Speaking of past Metroid games, fans hated the idea of Adam telling Samus what to do in Metroid: Other M, so they’ll be relieved to hear that he will be letting the toughest bounty hunter in the galaxy do her own thing in Dread. They won’t have to wait much longer to jump into this new adventure either, as Metroid Dread is set to launch on the Nintendo Switch on October 10.
